Projector for watching movies outside

Hey all,

Looking to pick up a good priced projector for watching movies outside when the weather picks up. Doesn't have to be anything fancy - just something that I can connect into a Mac that has a decent picture output!

Any ideas?

Cheers

Anything XGA (preferably WXGA) or higher resolution will be fine.
The BenQ 1070 (1080p DLP)is pretty hard to go past value-wise at ~$900.
But you should be able to find an XGA unit new for <$400 or used for less than $200.

The main issue you need to think about is what are you projecting on to..
Ideally you want a nice big, flat, white->pale grey wall.

Having said that, I've projected on the side of a Glav shed at a friends shack pretty successfully.
With some PC speakers hooked up to a laptop, beers and deck chairs on the verandah it was an awesome night!
After a few minutes, you didn't even notice the ripples.

One of my mates has used a door propped horizontally on a chair as a screen..
Sheet on a clothes-line or pegged on the gutter obviously, but no good if there is a breeze.

    • Ripples = 3D TV OB

Didn't notice ripples after a few minutes or a few beers?

    • :D
      Minutes..
Seriously, your eyes just edit out the difference. If you wanted to focus on them, they were obvious, but if you were engrossed in the movie, they didn't distract..
Obviously you'd get complaints if you'd "paid" to see it, but for a bit of fun on holiday it was awesome, especially when we noticed the neighbors had silently pulled up chairs in the driveway to join us..

  • Most of the projectors do a poor job if there is a lot of ambient light (unlike an LED TV). If you have any plans to watch movies in the daytime outside you need to be mindful of that.

    • Yeah, don't even think of doing it in daylight.

      • … while watching movies.
