Ooooo cheers, I've been meaning to revamp my explorer socks - they've long since lost that nice soft feeling.

This deal is something I can really stick my foot into!

    • Try some Bamboo socks. I wear mine with work boots and their great! My Explorers are slowly being phased out!

  • love my holeproof!

  • How are these in keeping your feet warm? Dad wants something that'll warm his feet and I don't know which socks to turn to! He bought these cheap thick ones and they lint like crazy now!

If I remember correctly explorers are only cotton socks. As you can imagine cotton isn't good at keeping you warm. Cotton is hydrophilic so it will absorb any sweat/moisture and that sweat will chill and make your feet even colder.

My advice, get merino wool socks. So much warmer and not itchy like regular wool. They will cost more though.

These are the wool blend variety.

I got rid of my explorer socks many years ago, I didn't even know they had a wool blend variety.

So these will keep dad's feet warm?

        • what about mine?

      • I've had some Explorer socks for YEARS (at least 10) and they are definitely warm. The only gripe I have with them is they're always around my ankles. (As you put your foot in and they fill out sideways, it reduces how high they can reach.) But I noticed the other day, there is a woman's version now that comes in three lengths. When I bought mine (men's) there was only one length on the rack. So if the ladies have 3 lengths, maybe the men do too?

Moral: If you want them for warmth and want them to warm higher than your ankles, get longer ones (if the men get them).

Anyone know if this applies to the womens' (pink/purple) ones too?

        • Yes, they definitely come in different lengths. I bought some for hubby once that were 'boot length' and are a touch too short. These may be what you have too.

    • You can get explorer thermal socks. Probably not on special though.

I find these socks fantastically warm. They are really thick and are great just wearing around the house and in bed if you have cold feet.

  • I have 8 pairs of these. and have had those same 8 for years. Time to refresh them I think.

edit: wait. I have the black ones with grey heels. Not sure if the same?

I see this more as a challenge then a bargain…. Great price none the less

  • I love fathers day :)

    Cheers.

  • Better let the wife and kids know about these ones :)

Would like to know if the quality control is back to how it used to be, bought a bunch last year that were not only incredibly tight despite having the right size but they also barely lasted 6 months before they became useless. I bought them at 2 different stores too which didn't make any difference

    • +3

Nope quality is still much worse than it used to be.

Holeproof is part of the "Bonds" company, which is Pacific Brands, which a few years ago exported production of most of their products to China.

My 5+ year old Explorers are still in better condition than the 1 year old pair.

And I'd only be wearing them 2 times a week at max.

Seriously do not buy explorers now. Absolutely useless stiff and not soft. My old ones are still ok though.

If you can stomach the cost buy BAMBOO socks. You will never buy any other brand again.

      • Absolutely useless stiff and not soft.

Interesting you should say that. Explorers is all hubby wears, and he was complaining about them being stiff and 'walking' …. there's nothing worse than having your socks work their way down into your shoes. Anyway, try washing them in woolwash. You'll find it makes a big difference.

Tried that after 6 months then threw them away worst bargain I ever bought. Bamboo sock are simply what explorers used to be but better.

        • +1

Weird I made the same switch, to bamboo socks that is.

Not as durable as old explorers but yeah, far better quality than current explorers.

I feel like people will think I'm some sort of bamboo socks rep, but I've only got 2 pairs, one of which died (toes wore out).

If you can find them for <$10 a pair, you are doing well.

        • +1

Agreed, I find Bamboo awesome. Have a two pairs probably get worn 2-3 times ea per week and they feel as soft as when I got them 6 months ago. Only downside is they are slow-ish to dry.

        • Bamboo Socks $8.50 ea on a 4 buy
          https://www.workweardiscounts.com.au/clothing-socks
The Mentor Ranger is what the explorer used to be. They put the pure wool on the inside for comfort and warmth and have a nylon outer shell so they are strong and keep their shape.

  • Couldn't find these in Melbourne QV bigw. :(

  • Are they wool or cotton? Are they the same one of the $9.90 socks sold at Woolworths? I remember last time I checked BigW they are not the same socks.

    • They are a "Wool blend".

Which usually means around 40% wool/40% cotton and maybe some elastane or polyester as well.

The problem isn't the blend so much, but the quality of the wool/cotton and the weave used.

  • Whats better this or All Day Socks?

  • Explorers are ok but the best socks are Bamboo - join the revolution :)

  • Explorers these days are a 50/50 wool nylon mix.
    Bamboo socks rock!
    Naturally anti-bacterial, naturally warm.
They just take a bit longer to dry.
