DivX Player: Which formats are supported?

hey guys, i've got a Telefunken TDV4360 here that i want to give to my friend.

he wants to watch divx files on it, but i just want to test out which video formats work.

could anyone please tell me which format i should convert my videos into so that i can test it out before i give it to him? i guess i'm asking which is the most generic file format i should use to ensure the highest probability of it actually being able to play the videos? is it possible for me to upgrade the firmware on it?

it has a USB drive, but i don't know if it can play divx files on it. i'd really appreciate any help!

thanks!

  • The instruction manual should give you a list of compatible formats.

I don't have a USB-TV but I do have a Highlander DH2826 set top box that was able to play a pretty wide variety of formats, MKV included.

By default, most TVs play .avi and .divx. There are some TVs, that also play .mkv and mp4, it really depends on the chipset being used.

  • er.. divx is a format.. so that is what you would need to test it with to see if it can play them.

Note (because this causes confusion) there are three things you need:

1: Supported container (.mpg, .mkv, .avi, .ogg, etc). This is often confused with the video format.

2: Supported video format (mpeg, h264, xvid, divx, etc). This is where 'divx' comes in.

3: Supported audio format (aac, DTS, etc).

Most 'DivX' files use an avi container and a range of (usually supported) audio formats.

  • ok thanks so i'd be best off using .avi and .mp4?

    • Which would prove if the device supports those containers. Why don't you just get a sample video of your friend and see if it works?
