Withdraw $1000 but only received $950 from ATM machine

Just wondering anyone here experienced the same situation in the past.

Not enough help from online customer service centre, just asked me to visit one of the branches tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

Have a nice evening

Go talk to the bank. those ATMs have double checking so it is possible they already know about your case. Years ago in the early days of ATMs I didn't get the cash dispensed. I thought nothing of it until the bank called me up and told me they had found a discrepancy between what was dispensed and what was deducted from accounts and I was the one that experienced the problem.

Also years ago I was assigned to look into ATM networking and I requested an interlibrary loan. The book that arrived was about ATMs, but it was an interesting read nonetheless. There are various checks applied during the dispensing process. Banks may be bastards, but they are picky about balancing every cent so they audit the hell out of transactions.

ATMs were (are?) incredibly insecure: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnaby_Jack

      • Sure, but it's a trait of bankers and accountants to account for every penny and has been so even before the machine age.

        • Not if you are an accountant to a gangster.

They want you to cover it up.

        • The boss I'm sure will not be happy if he finds discrepancies in the account in favour of the accountant. :)

  • I took out $20 from a self-serve terminal at Masters and it didn't pay out (but printed receipt as if it did - and when I checked later it had debited my account). Eftpos had been glichy all day in all of the different shops we'd been in. They assured me it would all 'come out in the wash' and that checks etc would show I was owed the money. Managed to talk them into just giving it to me then as we didn't live anywhere nearby and so couldn't come back to collect it another day.

  • check your statement. I believe it would show as $950 withdrawal within 24-48 hours.

I've had a similar issue in the past. I think it was the same - $950 for a $1000 withdrawl.

I contacted the bank, and probably filled out some paperwork. After a few weeks they looked into it with the ATM supplier who said no issues were found and I wasn't entitled to the refund.

I ended up writing a letter detailing they were incorrect and I'd take it further if need be. They came back and said they would give me the $50.

  • I also had similar, withdrawing $300 but only got $250. This was many years ago and the ATM was at a branch, so I just went inside and told them. They said they'd need to check, but I think it was next day they called and put extra $50 back into my account.
