I bought $50's worth from EB Games Box Hill during the Steam Summer Sale for A$50. The exchange rate was roughly the same as it is now. My guess is they bought a batch of codes back when the AUD was above parity with USD, so they were able to sell at 1 USD = 1 AUD and still make a profit, but now that batch has run out.
I knew it was too good to last. :(
Yeah, that's why … sad but true.
Prices went up last week due to the differences in exchange rate. Message comes thru from head office, prices go up… should be like that in all stores now.

Thanks for the info Chux, sad to hear this. I knew it wouldn't last too long. It is still cheaper than PayPal's sub-par conversion rate! :D
It's understandable due to the exchange rate, though to be fair they probably struck up this deal and already locked in their price.
I'd say its pretty normal, how/why else would they make a profit out of it? I don't know about the Steam Wallet cards in particular, but I have bought SOE game cards with $15 worth of value for $16.
I've also purchased $50 unrechargeable credit cards from 7/11 for $55+. From a business perspective, I would never stock anything that didn't generate some sort of profit for me so I guess it makes sense.
