  • I bought a plasma TV in February, just after the Christmas and Boxing sale periods, when all the retailers are starting to get rid of their stock to make way for the next year's models. From my experience, first identify what you want in a TV. In my case,

I wanted a TV that will let me watch 3D and Full HD content next 5 years. I dont watch much Freeview except the news and SBS, and I dont subscribe to Foxtel. The rest of my TV viewing all happens from Blu Ray or internet content and streaming/gaming from my 3 computers around the house. When comparing models on these requirements, the 51" plasma with 3D and Smart functionalities from Samsung and LG at the time were $400 cheaper than equivalent sized LED ones. For the same price I could buy a 40" LED TV without 3D at the time. I dont regret buying the plasma a single bit because the 10" extra real estate really makes the most difference in viewing pleasure.

Tech specs: When I bought the Samsung Series 5 plasma, I bought it purely out of the features I was getting for the price I was paying. I consciously ignored any literature on Tech specs, because most often these are marketingspeak and has little impact on my viewing needs. After I bought my plasma TV, I found the best place for TV discussions are at avforums.com (UK) and avsforum.com (US). The UK forum usually has the same European model for the name-brand TVs sold here in Aus, and you can glean a lot of good info from the posts there. And most importantly, use their AVS HD 709 free download to properly calibrate the colours and picture settings!!

Anyways regarding the refresh rate of LED TVs, at 50Hz, you'll notice blurring or judder, so anything at 100Hz and above will be quick enough for your eyes not to notice the lag or blur between frames. Most budget LED TVs are edge lit. A Series 4 (UxxxF4000 Samsung TV) usually means max resolution of 1366*768 and 50/60Hz, so its a very basic TV with no bells and whistles. If I were you, I would go to JB Hi Fi and buy the 40" Soniq instead at $349 than buy a name brand basic TV (that's hugely overpriced). You'll appreciate the extra 12" diagonal space of the TV. • thanks mate, I have only EVER googled using the switch "site:au" because i never thought about referring to overseas websites, thinking the model numbers and specs might be different (and thus confusing)!

as you say, it appears that backlit is only available in high-end, same with high refresh rate… seems that Soniq 40" is 50Hz.

i also often see recommendations on getting a bigger screen, but our loungeroom is small, so it doesn't suit our needs :)

    will keep on looking!
