Android / Windows Tablet

Hi all,

I am looking for a new tablet which will allow me to do the following:

  • Browse Internet
  • Watch Movies

Requirements:

  • Reasonably high resolution.
  • Around 9-10" Display
  • Not slow.
  • No Random Reboots (Owned a TF300 Asus, and it was annoying, with some searches on google, it seems like the Asus Tablets & Some Google ones suffer from this issue).

I took a look around the Chinese Tablets, but they seem to have issues with software, although the hardware is reasonably good.

I've owned a ME300C which was a Windows 8 Full Tablet, but was excessive for my needs, but seemed to work for everything, e.g. no random reboots and no issues with standby eating up all the Power.

Price wise, sub $300. But i will consider over, just give me a few models?

  • 1) Don't touch windows/surface - even slashing the price doesn't look like it's going to save those turkeys.

    2) Never heard of random reboots on Android tablets before, certainly never seen one. Not a general problem.

    3) You don't say what "reasonably high resolution" means, but a possible idea is to see if the local Aldi has one of their 10" tablets left. $249 and if you don't like it you can take it back within 60 days. Extensive thread here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2106509

Windows Surface is perfectly fine, since it's just a glorified laptop. It's Windows Surface RT that you want to avoid. Asus just announced they're back away from the thing too.

      • Apart from it overheating, and selling even less well than the RT, and having poor battery life, and being overpriced relative to a laptop (which is what it is)….

Nah, both of them are turkeys

  • are you in Sydney?

  • Really? Just do a google for it on the web, it shows that it happens to ALOT of Large Brand Android Tablets:
    Search For:
    Nexus 10 Random Reboot
    Asus TF300 Random Reboot
    Asus TF201 Random Reboot
    Asus TF700 Random Reboot
    Galaxy Note 10.1 random reboot

You will see that it is most likely a software issue, but seems to be extremely strange how all Android Phones I've used doesn't have this issue, but Android Tablets seem to have this issue.

It seems to be a VERY general problem, which nobody actually knows how to fix it, even Google has logged it as a Bug however they don't know how to fix it.

Maybe to do with quality control? But just a pain to spend so much then find it has the issue. Not sure if I want to do the lottery of Android Tablets.

Oh and I am in Melbourne.

    • Never seen a random reboot, never had a random reboot (on a tablet) in years of usage, across different tablets.

Basically the only thing I have that has random reboots is the phone, and that's because it's running a dodgy nightly.

Given that I've never really heard of anyone having it as a problem with stock ROMs, I'd have to say it's most likely an app issue if it does occur.

As ozhunter suggests, it's not unknown with other types of tablet. Simply wouldn't be a matter of concern if I were you.
