Samsung Galaxy Mega series any good?

I'm trying to find a phone for my mum that is a reliable smart phone with a big screen.

Any advice as to whether the Samsung galaxy Mega series are good?

(edit: removed reference to techriffic since they don't have pick up)

  • Keep in mind that the Mega 5.8 and 6.3 aren't just big - they're huge. Yes they are good, however they are more mid-range devices than high-end. If you are wanting a flagship device with a large screen, the Galaxy Note III should be out soon.

  • Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that my mum has never used a smart phone before and should be fine with a mid range device to start with.

She mentioned that she would be keeping it in her handbag so the huge part shouldn't be a problem (but I must admit I haven't tested how huge it is).

Do you reckon the megas would drop in price after the note 3 release?

  • Keep in mind android is not as user friendly as ios and you may need to set up dear old mum's phone. For example my note 2 came with 2 email apps and it was quite a struggle killing one of them!

Also Samsung phones are continually falling in price from release. Jump in when you can.

  • Its awesome if she would also like a tablet at home - being so big, you rarely need to pinch and zoom. I had the original Note, and then the Mega, and I've now gone back to iPhone. Mega is not really portable, i mean, you know you have it in your pocket - bend down to pick something up and you fear your going to crack the screen. You resist taking it out of your pocket in public to avoid answering questions like "is that really a phone?" I thought it would be a great match with the Samsung Gear. You tend to not take it with you everywhere because of that little bit extra size, and leave it on your desk more often.. Know what I mean?

When I walk out of the house, I pat my pockets.. keys.. wallet.. phone.. check. with the Mega, you tend to make the decision "am I going to take the mega?"..

I've rambled on a little bit long, I just want to make the point clear that it doesnt really fit into your lifestyle as well as a more traditional sized phone. the screen is awesome, and going back to a smaller screen, you really notice it - but the portabiity of what is essentially a portable device is a little awkward. Having a home in a handbag is probably more suited, and maybe more suited to the casual user like your mum. See if you can get it on loan for a week.. which is probably going to be very difficult. Try making a cardboard cutout, stick it to the current phone, and tr lugging that around - its also 200grams and the battery life isnt as great as I expected, contrary to reviews.

Like DRJ55 said, android is not as user friendly compared to IOS, just all round friendliness, especially to mums. Its great for us geeky types that like to fiddle and tweak.. mums don't generally.

I price matched mine from JBHIFI for $534, or its available at Kogan for $399 plus $22 shipping. (I prefer to avoid Kogan, even for $100).

Its been two months since your original post - what did you end up doing?
