Air Asia - Melbourne to Singapore Overnight flight

Looking to travel from Adelaide to Melbourne in September (Jet Star/ Tiger), then on to Singapore with Air Asia. Gets in at SIN 9:50am, flying out same day at 8pm with Etihad to Europe (should be a safe amount of time). Assuming Air Asia is the only budget overnight option?

Just Wondering

a) What terminal do AirAsia fly out of (assume Tullamarine?) hopefully the same as ADL—>Melb.
b) Are they the same as Jetstar etc (minimum check in 3 hrs before?- anything weird with AirAsia check in?
c) Will have 20 Kg luggage, any tricks there?
d) Food, best options to get a feed?
e) Anyone see any issue flying in to Singapore at 9:50am flying out at 8:20pm?

Cheers Gurus!!

    d. As with most budget carriers food isnt that great, so depending on your taste, a subway sandwich carried on is a better deal.
    e. Good break can allow for delays etc. But not guaranteed. One time my Scoot flight was cancelled, but events like that are rare. BTW it wont be covered by many insurance policies.

With regard to e. If you dont leave airside, there are sightseeing trips you can take from Changi to see the city. Look at their website for details. Not sure what go is if you are changing carriers but website should tell you. You cant do the tour if you exit airside.

You can take empty bottles thru checkin and fill with water airside Not sure about melbourne but sydney has drinking water fountains airside. But tap water is acceptable if its not.

Singapore has the same, but these are in the specific flight waiting areas, where you have passed the last security check.

  • air asia fly out of Adelaide now/very soon

  • Definitely look at the fares direct from Adelaide.

I've flown air asia before and found them to be great for the prices you pay. My hubby and I opted to pay for exit aisle seating which was great for his long legs. Seats similar to jetstar. Service was reasonable and food was ok but not particularly memorable (all things considered).

Think check in was online but we had to drop luggage about 2hrs before hand.

I'd fly with them again, if the prices were right :)

  • Cheers guys,

Customs allows you to carry food on to plane?

    Exit seats, do they recline?

Going to fly Qantas to Melb at 5pm (more reliable, only $25 more, and hopefully I can use my qantas lounge passes when I get there, waiting for the 00:45am flight.

Adelaide leg starts the week after we leave (naturally!)

    • Taking food on to the plane is fine, you will just need to eat it or throw it away before clearing customs after you land. I've taken Subway and Krispy Kreme on AirAsia before. Exit seats do recline.

      • I've not been asked to throw out food (except fruit), even when declaring it. I've taken snack foods like biscuts and chips, and even opened chocolate has been passed by our local customs, and Aussie customs are the toughest.

I'm sure there are foods you will be asked to dispose of, especially meats and fresh items, but I'd be happy to chuck them after 12 odd hours without refidgeration ;)

        • Yes, that's right. I was thinking more about fresh foods like sandwiches, meat, etc.

        • Yep, as long as you declare everything and don't lie about anything that should be declared (this includes food) they are happy for you to take it on. Customs just want to know what everyone has, not always to take it from them =).

I actually think the Airasia food is pretty good for an airplane, and very good for a budget carrier. You need to order ahead on the ebsite to get the full choices and a slight discount. Meals work out at about $5, so they don't gouge like some other budget carriers. The nasi lemak and chicken rice are what I would choose (I suppose it goes without saying DO NOT choose the hot dog!).
By comparison, Scoot food was dreadful. We've done long flights with both and a big family so we have tried most of the food options.
Note also AirAsia make an announcement they have a policy of no 3rd party food. I haven't seen them enforce it for snacks but maybe they would give you grief if you bring along a bucket of chicken or similar.
I had a AirAsia flight cancelled last trip. Their service was hopeless, sending me an email saying you must send a request to a general email address stating what, if anything you wanted them to do and not replying for several days(options were refund or move to another flight on same route. They also offered to change other airasia bookings at no charge if available. We got home but it meant 9 hours in the glamorous LCCT terminal).
They open bag drop approx 5 hours before the flight (at LCCT anyway).
I would do the Changi -> Singapore tour if you can (unless it is only for Singair passengers?) and note there is a pool at the airport where you can rent a towel, so keep you swimmers accessible.
Airasia will weigh your luggage, and your hand luggage if it could be anywhere near the 7kg carry on limit. They will split the weight allowance across your passenger group if someone has lighter bags.
I assume the aisasia flight is via KL? If so, the airside facilities are a bit limited at LCCT, so don't plan on getting much of a meal on the ground. There is a handy bank of powerpoints for charging ipads etc. You will need a UK style plug adapter.
I don't remember seeing specific charging stations at Changi, but there are powerpoints around the boarding corridors.

    • Yeah, I didn't mind that nasi lemak.

  • Exit seats definitely recline. We too our own snacks (unopened packets) and have never had any issues with customs. We didn't make a big deal about the food we had bought, and the hostesses didn't seam to notice or didn't care.

We also bought small bottles of duty free spirits on the plane (sealed) and had a drink or two with some soft drink we purchased on board. im sure its not allowed but just didn't make it obvious, ;)

You won't want much food at 0:45am anyway. Have a good meal before you board, being a few snacks, and you should be fine.

I doubly u will get into the qantas lounge as you usually need to have a outward ticket with a QF flight number, but check the pass for more details.

If you can, I'd check in your luggage, then go and have a decent meal somewhere outside of the airport. Then come back and have a drink in the bar :)

I second the suggestion of chicken rice. I also had one of the vegetarian dishes and I think it was pretty good.

  • Thanks all, great forum, very helpful

  • Exit seats can be slightly tighter across the hips as they are narrower, due the solid arm rests with tray tables inside. Airasia often announce words to the effect of "it is a policy of AirAsia that passengers do not consume food on board purchased from outside". But I eat my own snacks often, and they collect my rubbish. They have never said a word further about it!

  • I would say per order your food when you book the air ticket . I quite like their food compare to bigger airlines like Malaysia airline.

They are very strict with luggage and check in time as they are budget airlines.definitely buy extra luggage in advance if you plan to do big shopping.

Don't you have to transit from Malaysia before flying to Singapore first? I believe now you can fly Airasia direct from Adelaide without having to fly to Melbourne .it is a new route .

  • This starts in October, flying out September :(
