Look I like Aldi and I shop there but I think this coconut water is just another "miracle food/drink" fad. I'm certainly not paying $5/litre for it, no matter who sells it. And note: zero added sugar doesn't mean it's low sugar, coconut water is naturally sweet, unless it's from young coconuts.

However I abstain on voting on it since it may be cheaper than elsewhere.

      provides a healthy hydration alternative

unless you're an elite sportsperson, water is the best 'healthy hydration alternative'

I'm quite fond of tap. Trouble is it's not available in some places, such as Adelaide :-/

So is milk, and it provides protein and other nutrients as well.

    And is lots cheaper

… and cholesterol, IGF-1, antibiotics, somatic cells, …

Long live the coconut. (Still not buying it though; I'll stick with tap)

Its a good drink to buy, especially to drink instead of something with added sugar in it.

Just because a product doesn't perform miracles it doesn't mean its not worth using.

      It's still high in sugars.

      • +2

        So are apples…

        • I didn't say apples are a good drink to buy, especially to drink instead of something with added sugar in it. So your point is?

        • My point is that saying something is high in sugar when talking about naturally occurring sugars is pointless.

If you don't want to drink sugar, drink water.

If you exclude fruit and added sugar, you basically have water and milk left, and milk is high in naturally occurring sugar as well.

So basically your whining that everyone should be drinking water.

        • No, not whining at all and not advocating one drink over another. Take your point, but just because something is lower in sugars than something else doesn't make it a "good drink to buy."

        • Exactly… This drink has other nutritional benefits that can make it an nice part of a balanced diet.

Again it doesn't need to do miracles to be a good drink, it already is.

    • It tastes like crap though; which is presumably the only other reason to drink it.

I love coconut as a general rule but this doesn't taste anywhere close to being a soft-drink/energy drink substitute.
It just tastes like Bali water.

  • choice doesn't seem thrilled about it as a sports drink

"A Choice review hasn't found little evidence supporting claims the trendy drinks - which cost as much as $4 a bottle - assist with rapid hydration, weight loss and digestion."

When I lived in the Philippines, I had fresh coconut milk/flesh/oil on everything. Vegetables stewed in fresh coconut milk is brilliant, miles better than anything in the can. Tends to pack on the kilos though.

AFAIK, people over there just throw the water away. For one thing, it tastes pretty bloody ordinary.

In Bali you go to one of the guys selling coconut drink with monkey. The monkey will go up the tree pick the coconut and throw the coconut down. even with that performance i dont pay 1 dollar. why the hell $5 dollar a litre. More expensive than petrol with more energy pack in it.. /Troll off

  • They must have different coconuts in Vanuatu, Vietnam, Malaysia because in these places the coconuts taste great.
A fresh one, chilled with the top knocked off is usually less than $1

  • Horrible taste
