Cancelling Vodafone Contract

Hey Guys,

Looking to cancel my Vodafone contract but they dont seem to be budging claiming ive got to pay a cancellation fee ( My brother has cancelled no problems without having to pay the fee )

They claim the reception in my area is OK, yet they have offered me a 40% discount for the next 3 months but they will not cancel the contract.

Any tips from oz bargainers?

Thanks :)

  • Are you still in a plan?

    • Yep - about 13 months left

      • Well yes, you are liable for early termination fees per contract. I don't know if/how you can get it cancelled on the basis of underperforming service. Have you searched Whirlpool for what others did?

  • Is it a change of mind ? or are you having real reception issues

If you are have legitimate issues then try the phone rights app

    http://accan.org.au/index.php/consumer-info/phone-rights-app

    also try the http://www.tio.com.au/

    telecommunication ombudsman

they can help resolve the contract issue if you have a genuine issue

  • so do you have reception issue? If you are getting reception you'll have to pay a cancellation fee

13 months left of a contract???

Seems like OP is more wanting to leave due to change of mind/searching for a better deal/ other.
Since OP is already 11 MONTHS into the contract.
If I had crappy cell service would have complained and TIO'ed out of the contract in the first month.

Not necessarily so. I TIO'd out of a Vodafone contract after 14 months when an improvement they made to everyone else' coverage in my area left me in blackspot. It happens :(

  • Keep at them. Lodge a TIO complaint arguing coverage. There's no etc applicable for coverage issues though they may ask for the handset back.

  • 11 months in, you probably haven't even paid for the handset.

I broke a contract with Telstra, after problems with a plan, and them telling me to upgrade my plan and I'd receive a smaller bill.

I complained to them and the TIO to speed up the process,

Telstra came back and said, I'd only have to pay the balance of the handset repayments ie 12*$31.

I paid this and shortly after they called me back as a follow up, I said I have left you, I'm not happy, Leave me alone.

    2 weeks later I received a chq for $372.00

  • Why are they giving you 3 months at 40%

Is that because they think the service will improve by then?

If so then accept the offer and tell them that if it doesnt improve in those 3 months then you expect to be able to move on.

But don forget they may require you to pay out the handset.

Now in 3 months time if its not improved ring back. You will probably get another 3 months offer. If they do that then go to the TIO and say how its not acceptable. That way you show you have given them a chance. This will sit well with the TIO and show everyone that you did let them try.

In the past Vodafone was more liberal with their exit terms, but they have stopped much of that.

Digging you heels in now will probably mean you will take a few months before it gets resolved anyway. So go for the discount off now.

  • I got out of my contract with 12 months remaining. I did however have multiple complaints with the first 12 months at 50% off. Dont bother with the indian call centre. Go to the Vodafone Community website, those guys are based in Australia and are easier to deal with. You will have to jump through all the hoops.

I did have to give my handset back or pay $300 for the remainder of the phone, I was almost willing to do that until I asked about warranty and because it was at 12 months warranty didnt continue. So I gave them a counter offer of $100, they said no and gave them back the phone. Havent had any issues since.
