Vacuum Cleaner suggestions

Hi guys,

Do you have any suggestions on a decent value vacuum cleaner? I'm looking for one that can handle lots of dog hair on thick carpet.

I did some vacuuming today for the first time in ages and found out that ours is pretty weak. So i was thinking of buying my mum a new one!

I dont know how much they usually cost but lets say $100-$200?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Can be online or instore, im from Adelaide if that helps :)

  • I recommend the Morphy Richards one for $79 from Appliances online.

But, the BEST one for dog hair is the Miele Cat & Dog, which is about $800 (?)

Have had a Hoover Smart for several years and recently recommended to my mother to purchase one when hers bit the dust, which she did. She borrowed mine for a week and was so impressed did buy her own. Hose has put up with a lot of abuse and is much stronger than those that take little to unwind … has happened a few times to me! Suggest when you buy to do the "squeeze" test. I have never recommended a vacuum cleaner before, as I have had several problem ones over the last decade, so this is the first time I have suggested one. Relatively light weight, supposedly for small areas, not so much a large house, but has been totally perfect for us as I have a unit and mother doesn't vacuum the whole house in one go. Don't know what would happen if we did use them a lot though. I purchased the Hoover Smart model, with bags, and the suction is just great. You can purchase Wertheim "Dog & Cat" W2000 white replacement bags for it (comes in box of 4), which I prefer over the original Hoover ones. Can buy cheaper on eBay if you prefer. I also like to ensure that I clean the filters out each time I replace the bags and you have to reduce the suction power as it is so strong. About $260 from Godfreys. Said unimpressed salesman to Mum when she insisted on the Hoover Smart and no other, "Don't know why they are so popular."

    • Thanks for the post!
I'll look into it. I checked out the reviews and most say it is quite powerful. The only downside may be its build quality. I'll add that to the list of maybes lol

    • Thanks im reading through the thread now :)

I bought a Nilfisk GD5 a few months ago. I love it, reckon it's great, it's a backpack cleaner, I don't understand why more people don't buy them to be honest. If you've got stairs it's the best thing. I don't think I'd buy a normal vacuum cleaner ever again, it's just so much faster, it's got a 15 meter power cable so I plug it in once and do the whole house! Don't have to worry about smacking into the walls or getting caught on furniture or of course lifting it up stairs.

    • a bit out of my price range :(
