  • Got excited when I saw this pop up in the Freebies section! ;)

  • Geeze that's cheap.

Decent price, but…still loving my Series 5 51" FHD 3D Smart Samsung Plasma for $700 from last year. The new model pricing isn't anywhere near as competitive and the features haven't gotten much better

    • What is the model number?

        • Thanks beatlock. Im in search for a decent 50-55 inch plasma. Looks like this is no longer available.

        • +1
        • WOW seriously? they descoped 3D!! and Smart functions

        • +1

why the neg? it seriously doesn't have 3D anymore but the older model did. and it costs more

      • I think the second best choice is LG's Plasma TV PH6700series, was planing to buy it but till I find this one today, http://appliancecentral.com.au/shop/index.php?route=product/… $940, very good TV with all function and cheap as well!

        • +2

The PH6700 looks horrible next to an F8500 but that's to be expected considering the differences in price.

        • it 50ph6700 was on special for $799 at oo.com.au last week, I am getting myself a 60PH6700 for $1300.

        • yeah, I prefer the 60" one, and the 60PH6700 is around $1300~1350 delivered

    • +1

This is top tier models made to rival against the Pana VT60's and even the Kuro Elite, don't expect a cheap price tags on these.

E550 is the lowest range from samsung back then, it's been replaced by this years PSxxF5000.

    • Had that TV for about 3 months…its a lot of TV for the money but has absolutely zero glare or reflection coating, meaning unless you have a really dark room its unusable for the entirety of the day time (which was my situation). Sadly had to on-sell it.
This 8 series has the best anti-reflection coating Plasma is currently able to offer.

  • But are these prices good?

  • +1

Voted best plasma of 2013 by many reviewers taking the crown from Panasonic. Significant increase in picture quality from last year, with brightness levels comparable to LED's.

    • +2

with brightness levels comparable to LED's.

That is very important for Plasma.

    • +2

The only thing LED beats Plasma's on is glare resistance. End of story. Most users don't run their TV's in dynamic(or is it the 'store mode'?) anyway for power/longevity reasons.

      • Sunburn mode lol. The extra brightness and eye gouging colors do come in handy in 3D mode, since the glasses darken the image abit.

    • Yeah apparently it's 50% brighter than Pana's VT60's, plus it's got one hell of a black filter thats apparently going to make it rival the Kuro.

    • Yep won Value Electronics shootout by public opinion over Panasonic' s vt/zt series. Otherwise fantastic price

  • +3

Bloody hell…. this is sooooo tempting.

    I already have a 50 inch Series 3 Sammy.

Maybe my wife won't notice if I just snuck this into the house and replaced our old Plasma with it? She can't tell an Ethernet cable from an Enema tube anyway.

If you have been waiting a long time for a great tv and are willing to wait a little longer you will get a greater tv for the same money

    • +4

just waiting for 70" prices to come down to 2k

      • +1

I think I am too. Have a 50" atm and if I could get 68-70" for $2k I'd bite the bullet and upgrade.

    • Already got it this morning, can not wait any more!

    • -1

The future is now my friend

  • Nice one Lostinblue! I am in the market for one too but still waiting to bite the bullet…or should I say pull the trigger :)
Let us know what you think after you set it up

  • Must…resist…..

Been wanting to upgrade from my Panasonic 50" 'U' series plasma… But still, if this was the 64" I'd be all over it.

I love, and hate this site sometimes :-P

Couple of my friends picked up the F8500s (one 60" paid 2385, the other 64" paid 3135) a few weeks back. They've experienced a number of issues with the screen.

1.) Screen peeling. Started to happen on one of my friend's screen, position yourself at a sharp angle from the screen and try to look for bubbles. Similar to a poorly applied protection layer. This is covered by warranty though, but it's annoying to deal with.
2.) Buzzing. Although this is common in plasmas, it seems to be somewhat louder on these. My friends haven't been lucky with this. This is also covered by warranty if it's too loud. Discretion is up to the Samsung Service person. Be nice, offer a drink :)
3.) Burn in. Seems to be more severe with these plasmas, at least compared to some other models that I've seen. It isn't an issue as long as you don't use it where the image will be static for a while. Recommend that you use it as a normal TV (ie. free tv/blurays) for the first few weeks.
4.) Brightness pops. This was an issue with the 2D, where the brightness would suddenly change while using it. The latest firmware has fixed this issue, but it is still an issue with in 3D mode. Future firmware updates will hopefully fix the issue.
5.) Input Lag. This was probably the biggest let down, especially for competitive gamers. There is a way to get it to 60ms (which is still considered high, but hardly noticeable if you're a casual gamer) by renaming one of the HDMI inputs as PC, which is a lot better than the gaming mode (which I believe is over 100ms).

Besides those issues, the screen is great. It is as bright as they say, and can be used in relatively light rooms. 3D picture is absolutely breath taking, beating cinema quality imho. I highly recommend watching Tron or the Hobbit in 3D on the screen if you get the opportunity.

I myself have a 55VT60 (which I got for 2399) and have not experienced the same issues that my mates have had. The TV has a pretty good filter and works pretty well in light despite it not being as bright. But at this price, I highly recommend them.

    • Burn in doesn't matter much, if you run the "snow show" now then then you're fine, I've used various plasmas over the years for gaming (so static frames etc), wack it on snow show before bed and it'll turn itself off after awhile due to no signal and burn in gone bam!

One thing to remind people to buy Plasma during transport 100% make sure you have to put it up straight.

    • cheers for the tip :)

    get real

Lots of manufacturers use Samsung's panel, even Sony as well, but the point is what the level of the panel is.

PS: As all I know,Samsung do not sell their TOP panel to Sony:(

      • +1

also the image processors pcb is jus as important for quality aswell. :)

Not sure if I love the design or I hate it……

Good luck with the energy bill - 50 inch plasmas are around 350W - this is likely to run closer to 500W - check the handbook before you decide.

    • +1

Most of the consumers buying this are most likely AV enthusiasts. I don't see a point in buying this for 1080i crap on fta.

      • …to watch 1080p you dont have to be a entusiast…..having said that I own 2 xbmc machines…does that count???

        • +1

to watch 1080p you dont have to be a entusiast

No you don't. That wasn't the point. FTA shows have junk bitrate (if the actual shows weren't junk enough), changing your source will provide a better pq than buying the best tv out. If your main purpose for a new tv is pure fta viewing, then go with a cheaper lcd. It'll save you more money in the long run, you won't notice a difference.

grats on your xbmc machines I guess?

    • +1

If i am paying $80 more in energy bills this year for the additional usage of getting this. Assuming the energy rate is increasing at a rate of 5% every year. I will be paying $442 more in bills for this tv

How much is a 64 inches Samsung LED LCD these days? $3500?

I still have saved $600 of today's value. And by that time, 4k, or OLED will become mainstream - time for another upgrade woohoo.

    • Good luck with the energy bill - 50 inch plasmas are around 350W - this is likely to run closer to 500W - check the handbook before you decide.

So that's why my 50" Panasonic plasma, old HTIB 5.1 system, HTPC and my NAS and 8 port switch used 320W when all on? Yeah… #getaclue

  • My 63 inch Samsung TV was bought a few years ago for $4000, I know this one is 60inch but wow how TVs have dropped so much in price since. The TV is starting to have some problems though

  • +2

I would like to share my experience with this tv but a little bit of backstory.

*****************Apologies in advance for the length of this post and my poor english*****************

Initially purchased a 64" 8000 plasma this year in Feb and I got an awesome deal ($2180 something) as me and one of my mates struck a deal to buy two units. After 1.5 months I noticed Cartoon network logo (ghost image) corner and I panicked. I did all sort of troubleshooting like playing slides for couple of hours and scroll feature (built in plasma for screen burn protection) and nothing was fixing it. Though I could only see it when the screen goes white or some other lighter color it was annoying me to death.

I read more forums and I confirmed that I have a screen burn! Called Samsung support they ran some standard tests and finally sent a specialist to look at. He advised that this has been caused due to watching a satellite channel. I laughed and iI literally asked him that if he was joking! and is he implying that when you buy a sammy plasma then you should only watch FTA channels? He went quite took some pics with his tablet and made some calls. He left and suggested we call the service desk in a week as this matter is going to be escalated.

After a week called helpdesk and they said a part has been ordered to fix my issue and it was a screen replacement. A month passed and no one called me to give me a status update or when they are coming in to fix my TV. I decided one day that it was enough and called and to my bewilderment the helpdesk advised me that Samsung have now rejected my claim as Screen burn ins are not covered under warranty!!

I started shaking in anger and demanded to speak to the manager and the person advised well none of the floor managers are available. I then went on stating my "Statuary rights" and as soon as it came out lo and behold I havd the manager speaking to me. However, it didn't end well as I was told that the warranty conditions on Samsung's website clearly state that Burn ins were not covered under warranty or any other consumer law or statuary rights and hung up. I straight away googled samsung warranty information and read the same but I noticed that the consumer law stated to cover my statutory rights was pre-2011.

I then saw light at the end of the tunnel and called up Consumer hotline and the operator was really helpful and was amazed at Samsung's response for my issue. He asked me to download a letter of complaint template and send it to Samsung VOC department.

Within a matter of days they emailed me that they are looking for a remedy and will be offering a replacement! When I asked about the warranty the guy in VOC advised that my TV is covered for 5 years of any defects Standard Statutory conditions. the guy who delivered the TV was extra nice as he unmounted my old tv and then mounted the new one for me and I was more than grateful to him (saved me a couple of hundos).

They called me up and offered me the samsung 64" F850 and can I say I am more than happy with this TV now. It has not shown any sign of burn ins - though image retention is a problem but it disappears after running the scroll for couple of minutes. Far better than my initial purchase as it also has Motion judder control (though looks artificial in some frames but it is there at least as 64 8000 was missing this feature)

So in summary - Go for the TV and yes there are issues as mentioned by senzuri but the good thing is you always have your Statuary rights protecting your purchase.

    • +1

Very nice! People need to fight for their right all time! I am very happy with you got a best result at the end. By the way, could you tell more about the statutory rights in this case? Where can I find it? thank you!

  • Well this hurts….I just bought this exact TV from Bing Lee earlier in the week for $2690 :(

I wonder if Bing Lee has a price Gaurantee like Office Works or if there is some other way to get the discount retroactively?

    • I remember at that that you can get gift card which 10% value as the purchase price? yeah, but still more expensive than now.

      • ya it was a good deal at that price with the 10% gift card but this is hundreds of dollars cheaper even taking that in to account

        • +6

Just thought I would update my situation for any ozbargainers who find themselves in similar situations.

Bing Lee has graciously offered to refund the price difference, saved nearly $700 just by asking nicely! Great customer service

        • wow, good job man!

Hey guys. I jumped on this deal. This is the following correspondence from Bing Lee; I found it odd and in turn was afraid to send pictures/details of my license and stuff (identify fraud) .. anyone else get asked for this .. I paid PayPal .. Most worried about the 'advice' bit about possible damage through 'delivery' .. should I be, or am I reading too much into this?

    Hi G.:

Thank you for the additional info. Your order has been processed, and the TV will be shipped out next Monday.

Consider the fact that the TV is large, your place is long way from Sydney, and the TV is delivered by a courier, (the TV would have been transferred between places a few times before reaching you) please make sure you are there to receive and inspect the TV. (Inspect for damage to box, open inspecting the panel if necessary)

Please feel free to contact us should you experience problem.

    Regards

    Brian

If you have any enquiry please do not hesitate in contacting me directly.

    Regards,

    • Did you just purchase online or call them? If online, I wouldn't have thought they'd need extra ID. I've also had to do this for some overseas companies in the past.

  • Bought one in store for $2420 delivered

Happy with the purchase, a good upgrade from a 50inch

    • 65" ??? Where from?

      • yes 64 inch

From a binglee store, not ordered online.

  • Got the 64" for 2300 yesterday

    • How did this happened?

I got it $2420 and when the store supervisor was issuing the ticket he said that this is already below cost and the sales who quoted me this price a day ago was desperate to make a sale.

      • +1

Just bargained hard. Told them I didnt need delivery.

When I found out the actual size of the box, I told them I did, but we already agreed on the price

        • Even with delivery, it will only be $39 dollars more. $55 even including opening the box is put it on your stand.

Regardless, you got the great price. Mind if I ask which store so that for my record so that I can bargain there next time?

Still, I am happy with the price that I pay. But you did great.

        • It was Alexandria store, in the Home Centre

        • ?! same store that i went to….

  • For those who still believe LED LCD is far so superior than a high-range plasma . Bing Lee now having this mid-range on special:

    60 inch UA60F6400 for $2188 delivered. ($89 more than the 60)

    http://www.binglee.com.au/samsung-ua60f6400-60-series-6-3d-f…

  • Has anyone TV been delivered yet? Just checked in the Allied Express website, and mine was 'apparently' delivered at 12 today when I've been home all day and no one has come here, and there's been no card left at all. Reading stories about Allied Express is frankly scary from the reviews and problems people have had.

So how are other people getting on with delivery?

    • I got mine on Tuesday.

The Allied Express guys were good, they called me in the morning to tell me it was on the way (and confirm I'd be home) and the delivery guy brought it right into the house.

      I'm in Adelaide.

      • You got yours on Tuesday?! Far out they take their time delivering it here in Perth!

The original delivery time on their website said Friday the 16th.. 9 business days after it was posted. Pretty shocking, especially if you got yours on Tuesday.

Temando were good though, got in contact with them and they got in contact with Allied and said it's just a stuff up on their website. Still estimated for the 16th delivery though…

        • Keep in mind, WA is pretty much considered a different country when it comes to courier delivery times.

I used to work for an online retailer and shipping times to WA were crap at best.

        • Whilst generally I agree, and in most cases you are correct.. Yet other company's are able to deliver overnight, some a couple of days after. There's really no excuse if they can deliver something from Sydney to Adelaide overnight (I'm assuming tardisx was sent Monday), then it really is ridiculous that it can take another eight days to get to Perth over that. I can get something from Amazon in the US in less time then Allied take from Sydney to Perth.

        • Yeah it is ridiculously bad, and generally Aus Post is quite good but when it comes to courier companies they deliver to WA at a snail's pace.
