Apparently the i9500 has a more powerful chip and processor in it.

    • Thanks for the link JD.

I got little bit confuse when I come to : Samsung Galaxy S4 S600, Samsung Galaxy S4 Octa, and Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A.
      I assumed Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A = I9505?
If so, I assumed it's better than I9500?

        S600 is the snapdragon processor 4 core (Quad-core 1.9 GHz Krait 300)

        octa is the Exynos (Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A15 & quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7);
which is not real 8 core its 4+4

        LTE-A is Korean variant for using S800 (Quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400);
not available in Australia and I wouldn't bother because Australia doesn't use LTE-A as of yet.

        LTE-A > LTE

LTE is probably all we will ever get in Australia in the future eg. this decade at least

From reviews it suggests that 4G version has better battery life and slightly better camera due to chipset
The Exynos pulls again slightly not enough for me to justify the additional cost.

        • Thanks Narbe.

After reading the link. I think I will go after S600.
Reading the content on 2nd page that gives an idea about the performance for these 2 phones, both score about the same score.
But on page 3, Battery performance and page 4 Camera, S600 is better than Exynos 5.

I am kinda person that spend pretty lots of time on the phone hence I think S600 would be a better choice.

          (keep my finger cross)

        • as far as benchmarks are concerned, Samsung has been caught out by boosting benchmark scores. Link to Ars Technica article. credit to Anandtech for proving this to be the case.

Take any comparative results with a grain of salt. Once this happens, you are getting results that aren't really reflective of the user experience. Companies then spend more time trying to get high scores rather than work on making a good device.

        • Thanks sd4f,

In other words, I9500 might not be better than I9505?

I9505- is 4G, is hard to sell in lot of other countries where there is no 4G. 3G- They can sell everywhere.

    • Please share me your thoughts.

I live in Sydney. If I am getting an S4, would it be worth getting I9505 on 2 x contract with Virgin?
Or would it be better getting I9500 Outright from Kogan?

      • contract never become cheaper nowadays unless you bought at inflated local price maybe.
buy outright (import if possible, or second hand) and then put in post paid no contract sim like $17 is more than enough by TPG.

you can do your own calculation which one is cheaper. dont forget to add the FREE from contract which is priceless

        • Thanks Erwinsie,

I do agree that contract is somehow a rip off.
I was thinking to get S4 outright and I wish to get it from Asia country.

The reason being is that I a colleague that get an S4 from Hong Kong is able to turn off the shuttle sound when he is taking a photo. What he did is turn his S4 on mute and no noise when he takes a picture.

On the other hand, another colleague that got her phone from Vodafone would not able to turn off the noise.

Correct me if I am wrong please.

        • I think it's illegal for them to sell the phone with the ability to disable the camera shutter sound in Australia. There are custom roms that do enable it.

        • Thanks OzHunter.

          Noted.

Weird, on the iPhone put the phone on silent and takes silent shots anyway.

        • that's the only beauty about iPhone I can find… lol..

      • Do the maths.
        Do you need 4G?
        Do you value network stability?
How much do you call per month?

        All valid.

        Assume : 24 month contract
        kogan is $599 for i9505 = 24.95$ per month + Vaya $17.60 = $42.5 per month

If you can find a plan thats less than 42.5$ per month including handset repayment and has call values of $650(4G) then go ahead.

edit: warranty not considered eg. 24month vs 12month

        • Narbe,

          The 1st question about 4G… hhmm…
My thinking is if I get a 4G phone now, it's would be easier to sell it after 2 years compare to a 3G phone?

I did actually thinking if going under prepaid like getting Kogan sim card since I can make unlimited national calls and send unlimited national SMS and getting 6G of internet a month.
(Kogan only support 3G network tho)

But I do a lot of international calls.
I know I can dial into a local number and use overseas calling card to make overseas call but was thinking to avoid such troublesome way to make a call… :/

          Quick question.
Is Vaya network stable? How much internet usage do they provide?
          Paying $17.60 and getting $650 a month is a good deal… :)

        • +1

Do keep in mind Vaya counts in MB not kB.

        • which means they go by 1MB, 2MB… etc

But how do they measure when we only use whatsapp?

      • -1

Get the i9505, the i9500 has no LTE, and is going to have crappy custom ROM support.

        • Thanks Sturmeh,

But I9500 have better performance rating than I9505?

  • Get the 4G model. The octa-core model seems to have slightly higher benchmarks but in reality is seems the I9505 performs better. Also you're with Virgin so you'll get 4G speeds if you're within Optus' 4G coverage area.

Getting it from Virgin cost more in the long run, but you have local warranty. I'd personally get the HTC One over the S4.

    • Thanks OzHunter.

Could you please tell me more of the reason why would you prefer HTC One over the S4?

I am using iPhone4 now and just decided to go for S4 instead of keep waiting for new iPhone to release. Also because iPhone might not able to catch up with most of the functions that S4 can do so I just decided to go for S4.

And I need to consider HTC One since you say it's good because I would like to pay once to get a phone and use it for couple of years rather than keep spending money on phones.

      • The build quality, premium feel, and especially the dual front facing speakers. Also prefer HTC Sense over Touchwiz.

S4 has all the "S features", removable and bit larger battery, bit better camera, and micro sd slot.

        • Thanks OzHunter.

I will certainly look in to HTC Sense.

On top of it. I notice you are pretty good on Mobile phones and network as I saw you left a lot of useful comments to other ozbargainers… :)

Would you able to correct if I am wrong with the below please?

Vaya is on Optus network and Boost is on Telstra network?
If I am getting a S4, which prepaid sim should I go for?
          1. My thinking is since I can connect to a 4G network on S4, I would like to have it but not essential.
          2. But as mentioned before, I do make international calls, able to dial overseas straight from the sim card would be good but I don't mind call locally to connect to another overseas calling card (only works if I am getting unlimited calls sim-card).

I appreciate you opinion which network should I go for or if you other better option.

          Thanks in advance.

        • Vaya is on Optus network and Boost is on Telstra network?

          Correct
Vaya may be good enough for you it all depends on where you live but Telstra is known to have the best coverage and fastest internet speed. I was with Telstra for 2 years then switch to Liveconnected(now owned by Vaya) and noticed the decrease in speed and coverage but it still good enough for and am happy with it.

Vaya doesn't look like it has plans where international calls are included. If you make heaps of calls, might as well go with Virgin. I'd get the 4G model if you're getting a high end phone, reselling would be easier and you get to enjoy faster internet speeds.

        • Thanks OzHunter…

After putting everything you said into consideration, I believe S4 I9505 would be the phone I am getting. The reason is that it has better reselling value and also the functionality of it.

Re phone plan, I am thinking Virgin would be a better choice since I make lots of overseas calls. Rather than calling a local number and connect to overseas calling card that could be more troublesome.

I am on Vodafone now. Is it a good idea to change to Virgin?
In saying that Virgin has 4G Network, Rollover unused credit, and 3GB internet.
Comparing with Vodafone that 4G Network soon, and 1.5GB internet.

(I may need to consider that my girlfriend will stuck with Vodafone till Dec-14..sigh)

I work for a mobile store, and highly recommend getting the i9505 over the i9500. I would say that for every faulty i9505 that we have returned, there would be around three faulty i9500 devices returned. The i9505 sells better too, which makes this more worrying.

    • Thanks Mark-F,

Would you able to advise what are the common reasons for I9505 returns?

  • +1

I9505 cheaper, battery life better, performance about the same. LTE support.

    tick all the boxes
