Apple Laptop Warranty Rights?

Hi there,

I bought a MacBook Pro Retina last year around November so it's still within one year of Apple's Warranty.

The laptop has since been in repair twice for various things such as a faulty screen and bad motherboard.

I was wondering, after reading the ACCC guidelines. If I have another major fault that affects the usability of the laptop in a major way does that mean I can reasonably ask for a replacement or a refund?

Why I'm wondering this is because there have been some issues and I'm getting tired of having to bring it in for repairs ( which Apple had so far courteously complied with)

I was just wondering what rights do I have and does Apple even listen to them?

Thanks for reading.

  • The first thing you should do is ask Apple. Politely mention that since it is coming in for repair a third time that you would like the unit to be replaced, rather than repaired. If it's a refund you want, same thing. Tell them that the amount of repairs needed have made you want to re-think your choices and you'd like money back.

Honestly, I can't see money back being too likely, but as far as I know they are required to offer a refund if it's a major fault. Maybe go in and ask for money back first, if they say no then tell them you'd settle for a replacement rather than a repair.

      Thanks that's very interesting.

If it suffers another major hiccup I'll have a different chat.

I've always tried to be polite to retail staff and that is one of the reasons why I try not to ask for unreasonable demands.

Retail staff get treated crap sometimes.

  • You can get a new one. It happened with me with my ipad 2 and due to they did not have any stock of the same model they offered me ipad 4(was lucky)

And one of my friends had some problem with MacAir, they gave him brand new one with app store credit.

Try your luck there is nothing to loss

  • Thanks for your posts.

I forgot to mention another thing. The costs quotes for replacing the screen and motherboard is already nearly reached half the cost for the entire laptop already.

I didn't pay anything because it was under warranty but now the laptop is in for repairs again because there are massive 'bright spotlights' on the screen that stay on maximum brightness when I dim the screen on battery to conserve electricity.

Each screen replacement was quoted at $699 (Apple values it) so that's $1399 that Apple has already paid or incurred for repairing my laptop.

If it continues to be a lemon laptop it's cheaper for them to just replace it with a working unit.

These problems I'm having are serious enough that they have tried all diagnostics and still end up having to repair it time and time again.

They only give you the price of the repair to try and make Applecare seem like a good investment. That is nowhere near the price it would cost Apple.

Apple changed this policy 3 or so years ago making all authorised repair agents show the price the repair would have cost. They are supposed to try and sell you Applecare, if you haven't already got it, when you pickup the repair - using that pricing to say "Just one repair like this in the next 2 years and you are ahead".

As for the replacement - just tell them you have lost confidence in the unit you have got after 3 major faults and would like a refund or a replacement with the newer model (if there is one).

  • that anti lemon law would be great here, except i believe it only applies to cars, hmm, maybe you could whack on 4 wheels and call it a lemon car? lol

    • What anti lemon law?

  • Most laptop manufacturers do 'replace/refund' the unit after 3 issues if you request it. So i cant see Apple being different.
Ipads are always replaced to my knowledge.

  • Apple is generally really good to deal with. I've had both my iMac and my macbook repaired without a hassle, even though both were out of warranty. You should definitely ask them for a replacement rather than repair and you could be pleasantly surprised. Seeing that you are having a few issues, it might be worth it to get applecare as well.
