Something wierd is going on - help!

I consider myself pretty cluey when it comes to computers, but this ones got me stumped..

You know when you touch the volume control on a windows computer it makes a DING sound?

Well my computer is randomly, for no discernable reason, making this sound on its own, every few hours, itll do it about 15 times, in 1-2 second intervals… and its freaking me the hell out…

Any ideas?

There's something wrong with your keyboard, perhaps? A key is probably being pressed down without you knowing it.

Try plugging in a different kb.

So the volume control is touch sensitive?

  • Clean the keyboard? Volume control on the keyboard?

  • +2

    The cat?

    • hehe

  • There's no key on the keyboard that makes it make that sound. The only way i know to manually make that sound is to go to the taskbar, click the volume icon, and then click the volume slider..

My keyboard (G110) has a volume wheel and mute button, but neither cause it to make that sound….

    Very weird.

  • When was the last time you cleaned all the dust from the inside of the pc?

Sounds silly but also worth checking the troubleshoot section of the bios in the owners manual/ motherboard manual for warning beeps sequences.

Overheating warnings using beeps etc is not unknown.

    • Yeah but a bios sound would sound different then a Windows sound unless Riczter does not know the difference.

      • The BIOS/POST beeper is a very different beep to the windows volume slider beep, im not a total nub :P

    • It is pretty damn dusty… I'm gonna give it a clean this weekend.

    • Bios beeps are loud, sounds like fire alarm lol.

Might be some sort of reminder?

  • Remove the keyboard, does it still make that sound?

  • Is it a dell?

    • Nah custom built Asus P8Z77-V LX with win 8

Ok it just did it again and I listened to the sequence… it beeps at about 2 second intervals, and this time it beeped 8 times, paused (for 5 seconds) one more beep, pause, 6 beeps, pause, 2 quick beeps and 2 more normal beeps … Like some kind of wierd code… then an AVG virus notification told me I had a trojan in my WinRAR hkcmd.exe file… I removed it and I'll let you know if it happens again.

My theory is it was the virus gaining sentience and trying to communicate with me…

Computers. They never cease to amaze me in finding new and unique ways to do things they aren't supposed to. -.-

could be either dirty keyboard or dusty computer. do you have a separate program for your sound? try reinstalling it.

that been said I'm sorry I negged you, I'm typing this on mobile and misclicked the - instead of +

      • can a mod revoke my neg on riczter's comment. misclick, I was meant to pos

        • -2

I'm not a mod on this site but I'm a mod on another site….I'll give it a shot.

          Bam, there she goes.

        • You can click + yourself to remove a negative (but you can't press + again to add the positive that you originally intended)

      • Click on "votes" at the bottom of the comment and you can remove your neg

    • The same thing happens to me. I sense its something with Windows 8.

    Do a search for ding.wav

    Then delete it

    Problem solved

    • +2

      Problem solved

Not really. There is a Windows event that's causing the sound be played, so deleting the WAV file is simply like taking the light bulb out of a low oil pressure warning out of a car. It's no longer annoying you, but main problem is still not solved.

Maybe it was just the worlds most pointless computer virus :S

    • +2

i wouldn't say pointless lol, its purpose was to irritate you and i think its meeting its objectives rather well.
Anyway, try a safe mode virus scan or check whether your sound card drivers are all up to date and working alright.
      Good Luck

    • Perhaps it's a different variation of this feature which is actually an alarm for a failed CPU fan.

Some other things you could check are your temps. You could also boot up in safe mode and see if the PC still makes the sound. If there is a Windows problem, you can open up Event viewer and look through the Admin events to see what sort of errors have come up recently.

You can also identify what process is making the sound using volume control
      http://superuser.com/questions/138002/what-process-is-making…

      • I think I'd prefer the classical music haha, but cheers that's a good idea I'll check it out.

  • Oh! that reminds me, something else that has been happening lately which may be related is a problem with the graphics card. While playing NFS:MW every now and then it would start to freeze up, not completely, just slow right down to like 1 or 2 frames a second. I found by accident that pressing the escape key immediately made it smooth again. This was happening once every 10 mins or so.. It also happened a couple of times while watching youtube vids, escape still worked to return it to normal, and the escape key didn't perform the normal escape key function (bring up the pause menu in the game) which makes me think maybe a program was trying to start in the background or something, but there was nothing in the taskbar… I dunno.

Maybe the graphics card is dying, it is pretty old. And I do really suck at maintaining my computer, the air intake is covered in dust and I can hear the fans spinning up louder than normal more often indicating it is struggling. I'm probably slowly killing my new computer through negligence. I'll get on it this weekend I promise.

Meanwhile, can you recommend a good utility to check my temps and voltages and will it show if both my fans are spinning?
Cheers for the help too :)

Open Hardware Monitor is fairly legit

      • +2

I'd would checking the computer for malware first. Seeing as you had one Trojan who knows what else is roaming on your comp.

        • www.surfright.nl download hitman pro and say 'do not install just run' and see if it detects anything other than cookies

  • Do you clean inside your PC? I have to do it regularly for dust. Just after cleaning, the internal soundcard chucks a hissy fit… i.e. Normally, when you plug different devices into the soundcard audio sockets, it automatically detects a new device. After cleaning, a couple of those sockets keep auto-detecting a new device, and popping up a window wanting me to select what the new device is (headphones, speaker, mic) - but there's nothing really there. After a while it settles down and stops.

So as someone said - maybe dust bridging out across some pins in the audio area - or if you do clean/vacuum yourself, maybe static discharge damaged something the last time you did it.

One way to check would be to change the soundcard - or if you use the internal sound (on the motherboard), plug in a soundcard and disable the internal sound. If the noise stops, the problem was in the internal soundcard.

  • God its a ticking time bomb lol

Nope. We've already ruled out that its not a Dell ;)

      • FWIW owned 4 dells. Never had a problem with them

        • My one and only Dell laptop went up in flames 3 months after I bought it. That was in 2006. Linky

  • It didnt do it at all last night So i'm thinking it might be fixed.. But when I get home from work I'll do some more investigation and let you know what the cause was whether it was dust, strange virus, or aliens.

    • Look for anything strange in task manager and msconfig start up.

Your anti virus might has its own ask manager which might be more useful.

Did you know Macgyver & I share the same name? Fun fact of the day..
Not the best nickname to have through high school either. But marginally better than 'dick'.

I liked him better in stargate

    • Maybe your sound is now mute, whoever hacked your computer is reading here lol

  • At first I thought one of my mates had gained control of my team viewer account and was playing silly buggers. Coz I did a similar thing to them a little while ago, gained control of their computer in the middle of the night and turned on some rock music full volume.. Good times.

  • It'll be the shift key. Press it 5 times quickly it make a beep, keep pressing it it makes different longer noises.

    • Nah the sticky keys sound is more of a blip than a ding.

  • +1

    Did you solve this yet?

This to me seems likely to be the virus issue you've mentioned rather than anything else. The "ding.wav" has to be played by some service and is distinctly different from the sound the bios makes

  • I have to say, this has started to happen to me too, normally when playing a particular game through Steam.

I started closing down processes and it stopped, but came back on when Steam was running.

I have 2 anti-virus (one 'cloud' based) and malware bytes Pro, and I'll start to run them to try and find something.

    • That's interesting.. Coz I only recently installed steam as well.. And "Steam Client Bootstrapper" Comes up as one of the applications using the speakers in the Volume Mixer. Which Is kind of odd.

      • Might be trying to update?
I'd just stop it from starting unless when you click into steam. Generally don't want crap like that running all the time.

  • Riczter

There is a 98% chance that this is not a virus or trojan, AVG could have thrown up a false positive in this case.

This smells very much like a fault code and some motherboards actually pass the bios fault code to the computer windows sound system.

A fault condition in hardware or dust causing overheating of some component is a very likely cause.

Even if it is non of these i have mentioned, clean it out anyway…

  • Ran malwarebytes over all of my drives and nothing came up.

Will have a look at running the A/V later.

    • Disconnect all peripherals except mouse and keyboard
    • start the on screen keyboard, see if any buttons are being pressed.
    • if win 7/8 look at volume control, see which programs are making sounds
    • boot linux from a live cd… see if making sounds?
    • virus scan etc
  • Could be a rootkit. Try running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky.
    http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/tdsskiller
    Very small, no installation needed.

  • Just fix it damm you

  • Ummm have you considered the beeping is a warning code for your motherboard? find the model number manual, and trace down the motherboard warning codes.

  • Ran my A/V also and had nothing come up.

    Two other things I did:
    1. Windows Action Center had a message for me (little white flag in the system tray), so I tended to that and ran a Windows update
    2. Removed notifications from friends on Steam (in the settings).

See how that all goes in the longer run. Best of luck with yours.

  • Memory issue: Beep (1 long 2 short)
Graphics card issue: Beep (1 long 3 short)
    CPU issue: Beep (5 short)

Maybe your everything has died at once :P

(This is if your mobo has routed to codes to windows, which I doubt very much)

  • This happened on a customer computer I was working on (Random ding.wav playing), open up control panel and go to System Sounds and under the Sounds tab change "Close Program" to (None)

  • I've seen this happen to others -People lean on the biometric scanner/finger print scanner and it tries to authenticate it.. make sure you don't rest your palm on it.
