Whetstone?

Hey guys I'm looking to sharpen my knives as they are getting blunt and a few have chips.

I checked out a couple listed below, is their anything better in terms of quality wise? I'm not too familiar with brands, I don't want to buy a cheapy one and buy another stone again and again.

I checked ebay they go for around $25+ but I don't know if I can vouch for the quality since it is ebay.

Peters of Kensington have a 220/1000 $37

Victorias Basement has a medium grit (800) for $29.95

I read a few links online and most recommend around #1000 grit for general knife sharpening, I saw a couple of videos as well some said to get a duel whetsone with a fine and coarse stone (3000/8000) but I think the general consensus is 1000.

Knife sharpeners are the worst for sharpening knives. But thanks for the heads up.

  • I use one from Kmart, cost me $10, and my kitchen knives are scalpel sharp.
No grit numbers, at a guess it would be about 800/1000.
The coarse side is for reshaping and polishing out nicks, the finer side for sharpening.

Odd you would see a recommendation for 3000/8000, that is a polishing stone, super fine to super super fine.

Don't write off knife sharpeners, they give you the perfect angle, which you will not not get without practice with a stone.

A sharpening steel though, stay away.

    • I'll have to call up before I go then, I checked out Target and Big W and neither had them besides the sharpeners. SO I assumed Kmart wouldn't have them as well.
