Anti rust box

Sorry, I know that I am being very vague here, but I would like to buy an anti rust box for my wife's new car. We bought an X Trail in 2006, and the sales guy talked us into this box that sits under the bonnet and blinks. He told us that it would stop any rust on the car, I thought ok, but it works, it really does. As I understand it, an electrical pulse, is put through the metal of the car.
Sorry the most mechanical thing that I know about is a broom. So help would be appreciated.

  • its a scam

we have an xtrail too, they dont rust like the vast majority of modern cars (unless you live in the snow belt etc.)

It will be fine just wash it often if your near the sea, it will only rust if there's a hole somewhere letting water in or a scratch to the metal

    Don't bother.
I believe you're referring to active cathodic protection.

However, while technically possible/accurate - I would expect that any metal surface on a car is sufficiently protected. Is is not the 1950s anymore.

Would you like to buy a perfectly good Bridge I have for sale as well!

I've got some genuine left handed screwdrivers.

      • ah mate they'll come in handy to hang my skyhooks!

  • My parents' GU Patrol has one fitted. They are frequently off-roading and live in the bush so keeping it clean is a pressure wash occasionally.

They need one fitted, especially with the mods and the changes to the bodywork.

Unless you're going off-road or near the ocean often, don't worry, but if you want to protect a car for longer than 8 years, and use it in wet situations, get one.

  • Thanks for all of the comments. I have researched, well googeled, active cathodic protection and they say that having one is not necessary. I live in the bush and travel on dirt roads two or three times a week. So out comes the karcher, when it needs a clean. I'm still a bit lost, as my xtrail is in much better condition than many others around which don't have the box.
