4.2/5 rating (135 reviews)

Extremely interesting read. Other reviewers seem to have enjoyed it too

How did Disney's film become a calamity of historic proportions?

Michael Sellers, a Hollywood filmmaker himself, saw the disaster approaching and fought to save the project - but without success.

In John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood, Sellers details every blunder and betrayal that led to the doom of the motion picture - and that left countless Hollywood careers in the wreckage.

JOHN CARTER AND THE GODS OF HOLLYWOOD examines every aspect of Andrew Stanton's adaptation and Disney's marketing campaign and seeks to answer the question: What went wrong? It includes a history of Hollywood's 100 year effort to bring the film to the screen, and examines the global fan movement spawned by the film.

Am I the only one who thinks its funny that someone is giving away a book for free about a movie that nobody paid to watch?

It doesn't take a full book to understand why John Carter wasn't a success.
Disney's Marketing department did a pathetic job, they didn't try and establish who John Carter was, why we should care about him or why he would fight for an alien civilization on mars not to mention an actor who is little known and believes that he is too good for most movies.

Movie wasn't terrible but it was a bit drawn out and felt as though it would've been better suited to a higher rating than pg and as a HBO kind of mini series not to mention the budget which was way more than it should've been for a book series that is long past it's prime.

Now lets recap and say how to fix the issues -
Budget too high, film too long (those 2 work hand in hand, shorten the script and it won't cost as much to make).
Next hire a better marketing department, how about the one that handled the first pirates movie?
Actor who isn't a draw card and doesn't give confidence in the quality of the picture, get a couple of big name actors even if they are in bit parts.
Book series is past it's prime, start a marketing campaign for the book series aimed towards kids and reminding those that have read the series how awesome it is.

should have posted spoiler alerts… no need to download this now.

  • I read the book when I was a kid, and thought the movie was pretty good actually.

  • Kafka said, "a book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us"………don't waste your time with this dross…..this isn't a dress rehearsal
