Nokia Lumia 610 or LG Optimus Spirit P690F?

Found a couple of good deals on these phones and thinking of getting one for my son.

The LG is going for $20 and the Lumia is $49. Both locked to Telstra.

I have no idea about mobile phones. Mine is an android but I don't really use it for anything but the odd call and text. I have no idea about windows phones at all.

The guy in the shop told me he wouldn't recommend either phone! So I would love to hear opinions on what the phones are like and if the prices are good.

Pls share where you have found these prices?

    • There was this for the Lumia 610 in the past.

If it is just out of those 2, the Lumia 610 is better.

    • Thanks - is it alot better?
I chose these 2 because they were clearance price. I didn't want to spend alot - $50 was pretty much my limit.
Is $49 a good price for the lumia? Anyone know if there is a better phone out there for the same price (or better)?

      • The camera and display are a lot better. I don't know how old your son is but on either of these phones he'd mainly be calling/texting and facebook.

        • My son is nearly 14.

The guy in the shop told me they weren't really user friendly and he didn't know many people who liked windows phones!
I have done a search and it seems like a good price. If there isn't anything better for that price is it worth getting?
I noticed there was a lumia deal posted here this year that seemed popular.

        • They do seem like good prices after a quick search. Both are very low end smartphones and seem would be incompatible with most apps(The Nokia with WP7.5 and 256mb ram, and the LG having 150mb internal storage).

I'd personally always choose android over windows, but in case I'd go with the Nokia. I don't know anyone with a windows phone.

        • Buy the Spirit and give him $29 in spending money to buy some apps and a case.
They're fairly comparable phones, but the price of the LG is insanely good and with a bit of hacking could even perform OK!
Android is more likely to have the apps that his friends use.

        • The guy in the shop obviously hasn't tried Windows Phone. Out of the box, the Lumia is certainly going to have a much better user experience - it's easier to use, will perform way faster and last a lot longer than the LG.

I had a Windows Phone for 3 years and it still performed as well as the day I got it.

It will be missing a few apps and games compared to Android, but then again… the LG probably won't support most games anyway.

I agree that the Nokia might perform better out of the box, but the price difference is the killer.
You can buy another phone and $9 of apps with the $29 difference.
Is the Nokia going to outlast 2 LG's?

        • That's true… I'd argue that it would though, both in build quality and performance. No one who's owned a cheap Android phone sticks with it for long, they become unbearable to use pretty quickly. Windows Phones keep their performance due to the heavy app sandboxing.

I'm completely fine with hacking/rooting Android to help it perform better. However in my opinion a phone should just be fine out of the box - you shouldn't have to fiddle with it to get decent performance/battery life.

It's up to OP but I'd heavily recommend the 620. Have it right in front of me right now and it's a FANTASTIC low-end phone.

        • The 620 isn't an option, it's the 610
Those who hack them keep them for ages..
My Mum's still using her HTC Legend running Cyanogenmod which is only a 600MHz processor with 384mb RAM.
The Spirit has half decent specs.. 800MHz CPU and 512mb RAM and SD card (although the screen resolution is very disappointing) making it more comparable in performance to a Galaxy S which was a great handset to me for 3 years.
The Lumia is a better phone, but not 2.5 times better.

        • My bad. Agreed. If OP is up for hacking it, then it's definitely better. Especially since the 610 runs windows phone 7.8, which is all but unsupported. It'll run well albeit with terrible app support… In this case, go for the android. It's not going to give a compelling experience but at least you can hack it

        • I have iOS, andriod & win7/win8 mobiles. All are great but some are better than others

iOS on a i4/4S has a small scree, the ip5 has a fair one, great online store + apps but is over priced

andriod has great apps, most free or add supported & a wide range of prices. screen size >4" is usable & i have my 5.5" galaxy2 with stylus best.

win8 mobiles need a big screen as you CANT AJUST THE F*KN FONT, so i would go the Nokia 520 at 4" as the minium size screen. Ok app store + nokia apps which are dam good but i think 4.4-4.9" is the sweet spot; and its easy ti use and about as locked down an any apple OS ive used

        • A 14yo ought to be able to hack it. At worst, he'll know someone who can do it for him.

  • The LG is easier and cheaper to unlock then the Nokia from Telstra.

    • Ok thanks. I'm not too worried about unlocking. Do you know if the phone is good for the price?

      • For $20 it's a no brainer. There are much better (newer) phones out there but you're not going to get it for that price.

Are you planning to stick with Telstra or are you going to subscribe to another network (Optus based 900mhz YesG)? Note the LG Spirit doesn't do 900mhz 3g networks.
