Hi All

Has anyone got or know of an Android tablet that would be good for my 5yo daughter its her birthday and sick of her stealing my Ipad. So I will get her one.

Needs:

  • Google play
  • Ability to play movies (able to run vlc)
  • 7" or above
  • < $100
  • not too crap

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

She will still steal your iPad

  • Pipo S1s is roughly $91AUD. It is a upgrade of Pipo S1 which was dubbed one of the best selling 7" tablets under $90USD and was released last month and has sold quite well in that timeframe. Picked up much faster than Ainol, as Pipo itself is also a big Chinese brand. Only if you're willing to buy from the online chinese vendors though.

I can vouch for merimobiles and banggood, but the latter has better prices and excellent CS from experience.

Happy to send you a $10USD gift card if you go through it :)

Buy her a iPad Mini. There's a some really good reasons, but they are dependent on how she has treated your iPad in the past. If it is with respect and you can see her taking good care of it, it will be well worth the $369.

    1. Usability - for a 5 year old the iPad is way easier to use than Android, IMO, at the moment. I have previously had a 7" Android tablet and didn't enjoy it, not all games were compatible and it was not set up with English apps. This is what you will get for your less than $100 target.

I did thoroughly enjoy a THL phone in English which I bought, but handing it to my young one was an adventure in education, as it just wasn't intuitive.

    1. Apps - For education the iPhone is still the best resource for apps at the moment. This may change but an iPad along with checking AppShopper for cheaper or free games is just perfect for the younger set.

    2. "Not too crap" - You already know what you can expect from that price point - a throw away item. An iPad will keep its value very well. I just checked eBay and second hand iPad Minis were going for the high $200s and even $300 for the entry level. As an owner of an original iPad 1 which still gets almost daily use I can say that they are well built.

    3. VLC - iPad has VLC streamer and probably other options. Even if it doesn't, converting .mkvs to native .mp4 is a doddle.

    4. "Oh Daddy, you are the best". Enough said.

Now all of this is dependent on finances, I know. Believe me, I know. But if you can stretch then the frustration you will save yourself is worth the price alone.

I agree with most of what you say however I'd still suggest android.

my kids know how to do stuff on my 10.1 android tablet that I can't.

kids are smart and adapt to technology quickly. give them something to make them think about the technology and explore it.

Ipads are great but they are like guided tours are to traveling.
