2nd hand engine block from wreckers with low KM

Hi

I am about to replace my 2006 Yaris engine as one piston has done itself and got a good deal for an engine replacement with a wrecker with 3 months warranty.

they claim the engine has done 45,000KM on it, how do i know this for sure? by swapping engines will the ecu read and display the replacement engine KM on it or will show the same such as 180,000 that my car is current reading.

thanks

The kilometer reading is stored (especially with modern cars) electronically in the dash. You could put any motor in and the 'mileage' would still be the same.

Any way to check its authenticity? Not really no, it's a gamble.

I concur with YaBigGoose. It's a massive gamble buying a second hand motor. My brother has gone through 3 or so with his RS Liberty turbo. At least you have a 3 month warranty so you should be able to tell if the engine is a dud within that time frame.. Becareful though the wrecker might claim that the engine wasn't installed properly or that you flogged it yourself and try to dodge warranty.

  • yeah thanks for the info, a rebuild would set me about 500-1000 extra so i best invest in that path.

    cheers
