Yup awesome game. Got it in the last Amazon sale. Are there any recent similar game to this out there? I thought I saw a trailer for something very similar, though I could have gotten confused and it might have actually been XCom.
In terms of turn based strategy I think the only recent mainstream release would be Jagged Alliance, which is another remake. I played the original and loved it but haven't got round to the remake, which hasn't rated well.
That said I've played a few terribly rated turn based strategy games, like Brigade E5, and really enjoyed them.
The remake of Jagged Alliance 2 which is called Jagged Alliance: Back in Action didn't do it for me. It's more real-time game but you get to freeze it to strategise. Plus, the characters just didn't have personality (eg. voice acting was better in the previous series - even the original). However, a new developer have acquired the licence and all the preview stuff looks pretty promising as they themselves are fans of the previous JA series.
With TBS I don't think there's anything wrong with playing patched originals. It's not like the graphics detract from the gameplay or e enjoyment. Jagged Alliance, Fallout and XCOM can be bought for a couple of dollars around the place.
Does this game do fair justice to the original? Especially with regards to the music and atmoshphere? I'm feeling tempted yet protective of those memories..
I never played the original but those who did say this is ok, but original was much better. This one is dumbed down apparently.
If you install this and expect the original you will likely be dissapointed. It's been very streamlined(See:Dumbed down for consoles) for a less hardcore audience. If you look at the game on it's own merit you will probly like it though, the music is done by the same composer who did Deus ex: HR, very synth heavy, wich fits the mythos perfectly.
I loved it, apart from the few annoying "features" like shooting through cover/objects and the difficulty scaling wich makes the enemies stronger rather than more difficult.
Try the demo if you still arn't sure.
