Advice needed on video card upgrade for 8800GT 1GB

Looking to upgrade the old 1gb 8800gt graphics card in my PC. Just not sure whats good these days? Wanting spend around $200 or so.

Did some quick research and was thinking something like the AMD Radeon 7870 2gb PowerColour Myst edition $219 would be ok. Haven't been keeping up with video cards these days so not sure if that would be a good replacement?

My System Specs

Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-v lx (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8Z68V_LX/)
CPU: Intel i5-2500
RAM: 16gb 1600mhz (2x8gb)
OS: Windows 7 professional

The 7850 or 7870 would probably be the best bang for buck with your budget, you might like to consider a GTX 660 Ti if you want an Nvidia card.

  • AMD Radeon 7870 2gb PowerColour Myst edition $219 would be ok.

    This. Great choice.

  • Have a look at the cards within your budget, put them into this tool. Basically does all the hard work crunching the numbers for you :)

    • Doesn't have the 7870LE, which is the one picked.

  • Personally would recommend a 660 but AMD Radeon 7870 2gb is good value at 219. Either choice should work out well.

    660 for 199 here

    • The card listed is actually a 7870LE, which beats the 660.

  • Go with the 7870 its a great card.

  • does it make much difference in performance the 660 being a 192bit card and the 7870 being a 256bit card?

    • That is how wide the memory bus is. For every clock cycle of the bus it determines how much data can be transferred. Given that they have different clock rates and very different architectures it means… not much at all.

You would only look at a number like that when comparing two otherwise very similar chipsets.
