Dodgy Third Party Apple Lightning Cables and Consumer Rights?

Hi all,

I've probably bought 10 third party Apple Lightning cables (yeah I should have learnt the first few times). I decided to give a well respected seller on OzB a chance as they have sold high quality products in the past, but again these 2 have failed. I have contacted the seleler for a exchange/refund but I have been told they would have needed to be returned within 14 days, effectively a DOA return only.

It's only 2 x $2.80, but what rights do I have under consumer law to get a replacement or a refund? Should I not expect for my cables to last longer than 14 days?

And separately, can anyone vouch for HIGH QUALITY third party lightning cables. I don't mind paying $10 if they are the same quality…

Cheers!

  • You probably are entitled to a refund if you bought from an Australian store, but imo it's not worth the time and effort.

  • Crap, are you talking about this deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/110332 ?

Because I bought one of those. Wish someone posted some warnings in the thread. This is where negs are actually useful.

    • No, not this seller.

But there should be a warning that the vast majority of third party lightning cables will break after a few uses…

  • +2

If you paid with PayPal you should be able to get your money back. Just do it straight away. Don't let the seller stall you. These cables are the best ad Apple could get. I will only buy original nowadays.

    • Beyond 45 days now.
PayPal can't do anything about it.

  • It's probably going to cost you more than your $2.80 to return them to the seller to get a refund or replacement anyway. Technically you do have the right to either, but for that reason you may as well consider your money gone.

  • I bought one from officeworks for $15, So far so good.
    He belongs in the car.

I have bought several other cheap ones and some last a while, some don't
At the end of the day the choice is ours, if I buy a cheap and nasty one, I'm not expecting great things.

If I bought a genuine one, and it failed, then I'd jump up and down,
I too, have recently bought 2 for $3, fingers crossed.

    • For $15, I would rather spend an extra $10 and get the real deal.

I bought lots of cheap 30pin connector cables, they all worked for charging (some were a bit dodgy for data though)

  • I've bought mine from DX.. dirt cheap as well, took 6 weeks before I got it, but still useable after 3 months.. can't complain.
