Get Your Yahoo! Username Wish List Ready!

Last month, we told you about being able to grab the Yahoo! username of your dreams, where the first step was letting people keep their account by logging in if they hadn’t in the past year.

That part is over, so it’s time for you to start filling out your wish list.

To get the Yahoo! username you’ve always wanted, we’ve set up a page where you can request your top five choices. If your first choice isn’t available, we’ll try one of your backups.

In mid-August, you’ll get an email letting you know which of your picks is available, with link to claim it within 48 hours. And just like that, it’s all yours.

Your Yahoo! username is what you use to log into all our services daily, so we want it to reflect who you really are.

Since we take privacy and safety seriously, we’re announcing exactly how we’ll be working with partners, like e-commerce and social networking sites, on identifying that you’re the new owner of a Yahoo! username, and not the previous one. You can read all about that process here.

This is a cool opportunity for you to get creative, so have fun picking out your new username.

  • Nice concept. I wonder if there'll be any outcry from people who want their account back.

    • Definitely will. Big privacy issue if the same Yahoo email address is also used elsewhere for other accounts.

    Nice find, easternculture!

  • Thanks. Was waiting for this.

  • This should be really useful for both people who still use Yahoo.

    About effing time!

I remember signing up for Yahoo the first time. I remember the flat I lived in. It was 1997.

I used the same username I have always used for everything [1]. But I objected to them asking for extra personal details, so I gave BS answers - I was born in 1845, live in Botswana, my mother's maiden name is Burqua-Orff. Or something. Random.

Then I forgot my password, or got locked out somehow. Which was no great loss, until one day I needed a Yahoo login, and my same-username-I-have-always-used-for-everything was taken. By me. So I've had to use a different login, and it annoys me.

Occasionally over the last 16 years I've asked them to let me back in to my account that I haven't used since 1997. And they've refused. Left me guessing which random answer I gave in 1997 to their unnecessarily invasive questions.

Now… maybe… I can finally get my username back. Just in case I ever have any need for a Yahoo login.

I'm doing a happy dance on the inside. Srsly.

[1] No, not this one. The other one. The one I use for everything else.

    • You need to use the same BS random answers every time. It gets too hard to remember what ones you used where.

      • For sure.

But being conservative with personal details was a new idea in 1997, and I hadn't yet developed good BSing practice.

In context… I was on a 486DX2-66 computer, dialing up on a 33.6k modem. I didn't care much for a Yahoo login because I didn't like their search engine - Lycos was better, although that new "Google" one people were talking about seemed to give good results - even if its dataset wasn't as extensive as Altavista.

1997 was a very, very long time ago in Internets.

edit - just checked some Google history. It didn't really go public until '98, by which time I was in a different house. So in '97 I would have been using HotBot. See, such a long time ago my memory is failing. Not get off my lawn, you kids!

Yeah, that's basically my story, except I did mine through Geocities, and Yahoo in their infinite wisdom thought they'd merge the two namespaces.
