Isn't this the usual price? They have been 99c, 69c nothing special here. Although congrats on your first post OP.

    • +1

Well I thought I would let other people know about the cheap Panamax Tablets at Chemist Warehouse. Because I have seen other packs of 100 Paracetamol tablets selling for over $10.00 at some chemists.

      • +4

Good stuff but just so you know, pretty much every Chemist in Australia carries it at this price and it's in plain sight so it's hard to miss.

      • +1

No one sells 96, 100 or 112 paracetamol tablets/caplets/capsules that is NOT Panadol branded for over $5 - nationwide.

Please prove me wrong with a picture of some sort.

CHW are able to sell Panamax for 69c are due to there bulk orders for other prescription drugs (eg. Lipitor Atorvastatin by Pfizer) and are given bulk amounts of free Panamax.

        • +7

@paizuri: With due respect, that is just blatantly wrong. Although pharmacies in Australia are reimbursed for the supply of PBS subsidised medications by the PBS, the PBS itself is not directly involved in the medication supply chain to pharmacies.

      • Because I have seen other packs of 100 Paracetamol tablets selling for over $10.00 at some chemists.

yeah, I've seen cars selling for over $80,000 but I don't list every average priced hyundai

    • +3

      and even 39c twice :)

      • What's the difference, the postage is $9 anyway. ><

  • +2

haven't these things been at some ridiculously low price of around 50c before?

  • +4

OP this is the usual price at Chemist Warehouse. The limit of two packs is not because they are 'on special' - it is some sort of poisoning prevention / overdosing prevention thing.

    • It is because they get it supplied to them at a ridiculously low price, heard it is about 50 cents a box, sometimes even free pending which prescription med brands/generics they can push, and stops other chemist buying then reselling.

  • +3

    :| $8.95 postage, wtf?

  • This is the normal price but it is still a bargain, also the 2 boxes doesn't get enforced. I'm sure if you tried to get 10 they would stop you but I've never had an issue (I've grabbed 4 boxes before to save other people a trip up the chemist).

I still can't believe so many people buy panadol over panamax.

    • -1

It's just better marketed such as the S4 for example :P

    • Or over Panadol Osteo which are slightly stronger with slow release for around $6 for 96 on special

      • That's makes me laugh too, 24 panadol for around $5 or 96 Panadol Osteo (which from memory is equivalent to 1.33 panadol at around 665mg instead of 500mg) for basically the same price. Not to mention the Osteo is on sale all the time.

    • +3

But with Panadol it includes the placebo effect that you simply cant get with these no-name brands. It makes the tablets work faster and makes them more effective. And they target certain types of pain.

  • +2

Soooo Cheap for a bunch of tablets. I guess Panamax must be a lower-level tablet brand. How does it compare with IPad? :D
Won't go wrong if I buy 100 tablets and sell 99 of them on ebay.

The catch is these are not made in Australia, made in India. Works same though and the regular price is $1.99.

    • the regular price is $1.99.

At most places. I walked into a chemist and asked for a pack without checking and nearly died of shock when I was charged around $5 or $6 (it was a Sunday and nothing else was open so I didn't have much choice but to take them.

    • Mine are made in the UK. Are yours made in India?

      • Mine are made in the UK as well, no idea where his info is from.

      • +1

I bought from my local chemist warehouse and it says made in India on the box.

    • The catch is these are not made in Australia, made in India. Works same though and the regular price is $1.99.

Not Australian, but not made in India.

I have been buying them since they were first sold in Australia. Always paid between 69 cents (when on 'special) and $1.89 - All the boxes I have ever had said made in the UK. Has this changed recently?

  • Paracetamol toxicity is one of the most common causes of poisoning worldwide (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paracetamol_toxicity). Be careful!

    • +2

To clarify a toxic overdose of Paracetamol is considered at ~5000mg which is 10 tablets at any given time (in a 4 hour period) this may be non harmful but it is certainly not recommended.

So long as the taker follows the clear instructions 1-2 tablets ever 4 hours then you should be fine. Don't forget how readily available panadol/Panamax are in comparison to other medication which would skew the figures.

      • Stay safe and decrease your risk of chronic overdose

Keep it to two tablets every six hours and you will be fine (8 tabs a day max)

    • Paracetamol toxicity is one of the most common causes of poisoning worldwide
      Be careful!

I need to take it for Arthritis pain quite regularly. Sometimes as many as six tabs a day. I understand that, as well as 'toxicity' from taking too many in a short time period, there can be problems from taking too many over a long period (months, years).

      • Took Panadeine Forte for 4 years in a row for chronic back pain, spent the last year or so being sick most of the time. Moved to morphine after that (best thing I ever did … medically speaking ;) wasn't sick at all which leads me to believe it was likely the paracetamol and nothing to do with codeine (a prodrug to morphine).

Not that this hopefully has any relevance to anyone here but there can be problems with long term use.

      • Does just paracetamol work for you?

Have you tried using anti-inflammatory medicines and codeine?

    • Might've been alcohol as well…

  • +1

Made in India, not a positive or negative view, just thought I would mention.

    • +1

As stated above the ones in my cupboard which I haven't had for a long time were made in the UK, so I don't know if some batches are made there and some in India but I've never seen made in India on any of the boxes.

Side note, many cheaper brand prescription drugs are made in India. It doesn't mean they aren't good quality and they don't adhere to strict regulations, it's just geography and wage difference.

      • Big difference in buying from India or UK in my view.

I'd much rather just purchase medicine that is made in Australia even if I have to pay a bit more.

    • A chemist told me lots of generics are now made in India.

  • +3

It astonishes me every time I see the identical product on the shelves at Woolies and the brand name stuff is 5 times the price of the Homebrand stuff. It astonishes me that anyone would buy the 5 times the price but identical product. Deary, deary me.

    • +3

A lot of people are willing to pay a premium for branded medications. Mostly the elderly don't budge as they've used a certain brand for so long and don't want to get confused, which I think is fair enough. However there are those who you go up to and tell that there's a generic which is made from the same manufacturer (and thus the exact same product bar slight differences in packing design) and they still don't budge. Also what bugs me is those that say "I want the good stuff". Brain explosion I should probably mention that I'm a pharmacist who deals with this day in day out lol.

    • The power of branding and psychology.

  • +1

wow….100 tablets…..it will probably expire before I even go through half of it.
If anyone is buying these in bulk, you must be pretty stuffed, and I hope you get seriously checked out and hope you get better soon!!

I am waiting for the VIAGRA, the magic little blue pill, to be sold in BULK and at a crazily discounted price!

    • +3

Viagra is really cheap nowadays, you can find it online lookup 'Scarlett Johansson' in google and consider the pill taken.

  • +1

It's 49 cents at Priceline tomorrow. Catalogue says with any script filled.

  • I saw these (Panamax 100 tabs) for 49c a box at Priceline Pharmacy Bourke Street (VIC) yesterday

    • I heard it says with script filled. But if you try and buy it they won't stop you since it scans for 49c at the register.

      • Might have changed…or I might have not noticed, as I bought it along with a prescription I had to get dispensed…

  • +1

Hope no one believes the line about targetting specific pain areas. Such a drug would be miraculous! JoyV

    • This particular medicine doesnt say anything about "targeting"…it just says "for the temporary relief of pain associated with arthritis, muscular and neuralgic conditions, headache, reduces fever"

Other than the "Cold and Flu" versions, paracetamol based meds dont seem huge on targeting like Neurofen (except Panadol Osteo, which is a higher dose of paracetamol in a slower release formulation).

  • do these even stop pain?

    • 'Paracetamol is classified as a mild analgesic. It is commonly used for the relief of headaches and other minor aches and pains and is a major ingredient in numerous cold and flu remedies. In combination with opioid analgesics, paracetamol can also be used in the management of more severe pain such as post-surgical pain and providing palliative care in advanced cancer patients.[4] Though acetaminophen is used to treat inflammatory pain, it is not generally classified as an NSAID because it exhibits only weak anti-inflammatory activity.'

      I love wiki!
Some people believe that the placebo effect of taking a panadol/panamax is greater than the effect of the tablet but I haven't seen any studies done on the matter.
In my opinion it's a mixture, anyone who has the mindset that a tablet will help to ease the pain is more likely to have positive results. People who believe that a tablet will harm them through side effects are more likely to have those side effects. It's easy to test; for example my wife isn't aware that a panamax generally takes at least 20 minutes to start to work and my wife's headaches are generally a bit better after less than 5 minutes. That's placebo over medication (and it doesn't bother me because she isn't excessive with them).

The mind is a powerful tool, so be an optimist and not a pessimist.
