Decent GPS navigation for car

I'm moving down to Melbourne next month and I'm planning on driving all the way up from Brisbane.
I'm quite familiar with the roads around here so I never really needed an in-car GPS navigation before but now that I'm moving to a new town, and with the long drive ahead of me I thought it might be a good idea to invest in a decent in-car GPS navigation.
Especially after hearing this mysterious 'hook turns' and whatnot, I think this would definitely help me causing unnecessary traffic incidents in a new town :p

I am after something zippy and smooth as I've heard about terrible unresponsive units that crash all the time. Bluetooth phone connection would be a plus but not a must. I would like the unit to have the lane guidance (i.e. advise which lane to take), and speed limit/camera warning as I've been told there are numerous speed cameras in Melbourne.

I have seen several Dick Smith Navman deals but comments seem to favour Tomtom and Garmin more than Navman. I personally have never had/used them before as I just used my phone. So I hope the transition would be smooth.

Thank you in advance

  • Tom Tom Via 280 is a decent unit and has lifetime maps. Looks like it's on special at The Good Guys for $149. Not sure how long the special has to go.

    • Thanks for the recommendation. My local The Good Guys didn't have any in stock but I ended up purchasing that unit from JB Hifi on Saturday for $132.80 since they had 20% off all GPS navigation. Used my ING paywave for 5% cash back as well! :)

  • Mate I would go for the tomtom Go live as you can get live traffic info which will re-route you for any accidents along your way.

  • +1

I've tried navman, garmin and tomtom and will only buy a tomtom now.

    • Same here - we bought a TomTom after the Garmin got me lost in the middle of Brisbane. We don't live there and I don't know the city at all.

  • I was considering to buy this too, do you know if it has a good satellite signal detection in regional places like Townsville?
