Travel from US to AU one-way - Flights $$$$!!

Hey all,

Does anyone have any tips / advice / insider info re getting a decent flight price from the US to east coast Australia?

We're travelling to NY (flights booked) via the UK, arriving on January 2nd 2014, and we're basically trying to get home from there, arriving back in Brisbane on or around the 16th of Jan.

We'd like to go via San Fran, and probably for price reasons and airline choice only transit through LAX. I've been looking for about 2 months now, and currently a one way flight is $1400 or more, which is almost the price of return flights to the UK!

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? (I've tried Expedia.br too!)

Thanks!! Laura

    Hi Laura,

I've had a quick look and couldn't really come up with anything much cheaper than $1,400 one-way. Bearing in mind though, the return flights from San Fran to Brisbane for that period are around $2,200.

One tip to try and save a little bit of money is taking an internal carrier from NYC to San Fran/LAX - I really like Jetblue and they seem to have flights from NYC to San Fran for $167. Perhaps you could drive from San Fran to LAX if time permits? I have heard the drive is amazing.

I have also found over the years, flights are generally cheaper to book from the originating country perhaps you could do some searching and try and get in touch with a USA based travel agent?

Also just thinking if you are really keen to save money…

You could fly LAX to Honolulu and then pick up a flights from Honolulu to Brisbane with Jetstar?

Bit late now, but you would probably have done better to get a round-the-world ticket originally. The price of one-way tickets is often extreme compared to returns since you are more likely to be on business/desperate if you are buying a one way.

The only solution is probably as loiloi says and look to chain cheapy flights together (since they are sold as one-way to attempt to hide the true price). Quality is obviously the issue, as is risk.

Putting up a contest on FlightFox.com will cost less than $50 - you may be surprised what someone in USA or even UK may find for you.
Not many Aussies will know inside deals for the route home you want.

Have you looked at flying to Hawaii and then picking up a one way flight with Jetstar from Hawaii.

Alternatively, a little longer flight is to Japan and then with Jetstar from Japan.

Jetstar price their flights one way where many of the full service airlines price one way almost the same as two way.

When we flew back from the US after living there we used FF miles as these are priced based on segment travel. If you have enough miles this is probably the best use for them.

Or alternatively again depending on miles and who you have them with, you can one way to Japan/Hawaii with FF miles and then Jetstar back.

    Hope that helps

Thanks very much to everyone that posted, we now have a few ideas and will monitor prices for a week or two and hope we get lucky :-)

The round the world ticket would have been best, however we've got flights each from AUS - UK - US courtesy of 7 years of saving Qantas FF points, so can't complain too much.

    Thank you again all!

Hi,not sure if this will help but have you thought about cruising home…… http://www.ozcruising.com.au/Pages/Cruise_Details.aspx?cruis…

    Hope this helps

  • American airlines are selling points at the moment and if you can wait until 27th January which is the first date I can see as being available, you can buy 38,000 points for $882.25 USD plus a little more for taxes. This would get you a flight from SFO to BNE via LAX. See their website for details.
