Exactly, doesn't matter if the camera is 5MP or 41MP if the lens is poor quality then the image will be poor quality.
From reviews so far it is easily best smartphone camera at the moment. Though it still has only a 720p screen, and the cpu/gpu is poor for a flagship phone(same as the Lumia 820/HTC Droid Incredible
It amazes me how so many people think that this camera is something so unheard of and then go on to say that the megapixels don't count. Nokia has had their 41 megapixel technology available in their 808 PureView for almost a year and a half now. And the whole idea of the technology is to use super- or oversampling of all those pixels to combine them to a much better quality lower resolution (5 megapixels or so) final photo and/or to allow lossless digital zooming (essentially cropping). You can read about it there:

But yes, it is easily the best camera phone at the moment.
This is spot on.
Anyway, the phone looks fantastic. Without even testing we know it's the best camera in a phone, ever, because Nokia already make the best camera phone. They wouldn't release one that was worse. But for me that's all moot because it runs Windows. After having a rooted Android phone with an unlockable bootloader it would be a step back. It will be interesting to see how Sony's Xperia i1 compares later in the year, that camera is expected to be pretty special too. I like the direction Sony Mobile have shifted since splitting from Ericsson. They basically encourage people to unlock and root their devices.
trying to compete with Samsung Zoom camera phone!
they are not trying to compete) they just made the best camera for mobile phone + best reception + best voice quality, something Samsung will never have)
This is the phone I have really dreamed about. A big image sensor (among phones, of course) with non-Symbian OS! It would be nicer to have Android, but WP8 is also okay.
However, you should remember that Sony seems to be developing a RX100mk2-like external camera module for a new Experia model. I won't buy Lumia 1020 until the new Sony one is revealed. Maybe the price will kill them but.. at least I should wait.
I don't see the advantage of a 41-megapixel for the average user like myself. I rather have a good 5-10 megapixel camera with some optical zoom and manual exposure mode…
It would also take up lots of your memmory spage if taken at that resolution.
