Fee Free ATM Bangkok Wanted

I used to use my HSBC ATM card at HSBC Silom Bangkok for 'fee-free' ATM use, although I think that there was an overseas transaction fee. This bank is now closed. Has anyone found an ATM in Bangkok free of ATM fees - possibly on a 'Citibank Plus' ATM card or a '28 Degrees' Credit card, as neither charge overseas transaction fees?

  • you answered your own question. both 28 degrees card - which I use all over the world and Citibank (at Citibank atms) wont charge fees.

    • yeah, what Benicio said.

    • This is what I do in Thailand, the only issue is the ATM owners charge a fee when using an international card.

You gotta make a choice between keeping all the cash you will need in the hotel safe or paying the fee.

I start my holiday with 50% of what I think I'll spend in cash and try to take and pay the fee for the rest.

Change your money on the Thai side, take 50's and 100's only.

  • Please notice that some bank may not charge a "Fees" but they do charged oversea currency exchange fees which calculate by the amount purchase.

  • Now I am using cash only, which saves on all possible fees, but it is a bit risky. I only stay in hotels that have room safes, but still slight risk. I am applying for Diners Club so I can get free airport lounge access in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok (Suvanabhumi only) and Saigon. I do not really want to apply for another card or bank account unless I can be sure that overseas useage will be fee free. Does anyone have 'first-hand' experience in using a card in THAILAND at an ATM without paying both 'ATM fees' and 'foreign currency' fees? It sounds like Citibank might be a chance, because they do have branches in Bangkok.
    Thanks. Peck

  • I went over last year in July and was in the same dilemma as you are currently in.

I wanted to used my 28 Degrees Credit Card for getting cash out. Before going over, I loaded it up with my own money so I wasn't doing cash advances. Nothing special here, everyone knows how this works.

But, the problem you have is the local ATM's / Bank charging you a fee. From memory, it's normally around 150bhat (~ $5.00 AUD). The trick to get around this is to use certain ATM's. They are scarce, but they are around. I used the AEON ATM's and had no local fees whatsoever.

From memory, there was one in the Airport along a whole row of ATMs, just before taking a 90 degree right turn to head towards the train station.

And the rest of the time I was partying in Pattaya, the "Big C" shopping centers had the AEON ATMs.

You can use this to find locations of AEON ATMs in Thailand:

    • Brilliant! Thanks 'Realmholder'. Yes I have seen AEON ATM's all around Bkk. Yes, from my recollection, it is about 150 or 160 baht atm fee otherwise (plus foreign transaction fee depending on your card/bank).

    • I can second this, there is also an AEON ATM a short walk from Khaosan Rd if that's where you are (It is inside a small shop comparable to a small IGA, I can give directions if needed but just use the link above)
Edit: oops, just realise this is an old thread

  • anyone has any idea where is the fee free atm in japan?
I will be using my citibank plus visa card.

  • Does anyone know from experience if Citibank in Bangkok would charge the ATM fee for using the Citibank Plus card? I wouldn't think so, but just want to confirm.

    • me too

    • I have used my Citibank UK card at a Citibank ATM in Bangkok before and there was no fee charged.

  • Just to reinforce for anyone else interested, the following from Citibank:-
"You also have unlimited free withdrawals at more than 3,000 Citibank, Westpac, St George, Bank of Melbourne and Bank SA ATMs, around Australia and any Citibank ATM overseas."

  • For info of anyone, trialled my Citibank ATM card in Bkk, and exchange rate was equal to the best available rate for cash in Bangkok on that day, and no fees, and so WE HAVE A WINNER!
