Discount on premium brands?

From past experiences shopping for Japanese cars, there's generally an 8% to 10% improvement on price. I wonder does the same apply for premium brands? Looking for a slightly better hatchback this time, may be an A class baby Merc, A3, or perhaps the Lexus hybrid hatch. Do premium brands budge on price? Assuming brand new current model, not run out or demos.

Cheers!

  • Do premium brands budge on price?

    yes, of course :)

cheapest way to buy a luxury car is to organise a charity auction of one and be the successful bidder :)

  • They certainly budge, but for example Audi are not going to undercut WV, the whole point is charging you more for the Audi badge. Also Hybrids are hipster right now, so they have little need to drop the price.

  • 10% off audi is def possible, I got a good price by calling audi dealers in every state to find who could offer the best deal. There was a huge difference btw price and willingness to negotiate (and helpfulness generally).

  • To a certain extent it will depend on how popular and how new the model is. If demand has tapered off a bit you are more likely to get a good price. I was surprised how much I got off my MINI and I left with the feeling that I had still left money on the table. That's always a yucky feeling in the mouth.

  • +1

The possible discount relative to the sticker price is decided by various factors, including (in no particular order)
    -production/factory considerations
    - marketing
    - how sales of the specific model stack up against competition
    - where the model is in its life cycle
    - how the brand (not just the model) is going as far as annual sales

… and other things - on a dealership level, like
-how sales are going against the target set for the dealership
… and, of course, the RRP of the car.

There's not a hope in hell of getting 10% off the advertised price of a VW up!, a Polo or a Mazda 2 for example, because the margin just isn't there.

So… I guess what I'm saying is that you can't make accurate blanket statements that cover any particular make of car. Models also vary. It's easy to get a decent discount on a Commodore right now even though it's new, but try getting a good price on a HSV GTS….
