BCF has a great deal on a respectable rod/reel spin combo - The Shimano Sienna 2500FD or 4000FD coupled with a Shimano Sonic Pro graphite rod. Separately, they are $59 a piece, so a tidy saving for an extremely well reviewed reel. You can choose with line weight/length rod too which is nice - so get yourself a great soft plastics combo!
May the fish be with you.

  • thanks thebargainhunter…!!!

what combo would you suggest for decent sized snapper?

  • I'd be interested in what sort of fishing would be ideal with this combo. I couldn't find the combo on the website, but the items could be found seperately. Postage quote was $40 so if you're not near a store that would be a deal killer.

I'd be interested in what sort of fishing would be ideal with this combo.

You get to mix and match what they have in stock so it's up to you. If you're just doing light estuary fishing (for bream, flathead, etc.) then the 2500 reel with the 3-5kg rod would be good. 2500 provides more line than you need for fishing from the shore of lakes and rivers, especially if you pack it with braid.

For snapper I'd suggest the 6-8kg rod with the 4000 reel.

I own a Sonic Pro 3-5kg with a Shimano Sedona 2500 reel for estuary fishing and it's a good bit of kit. The reason I went for the 3-5kg over the 2-4kg is because the 2-4kg has a very thin tip that looked extremely fragile. The 3-5kg has a much more solid tip. It won't be as responsive, or as fun, as the 2-5, but it gives you a bit more piece of mind it'll take a bit extra to snap it.

The sonic pro's are graphite rods so you have to take a lot of care transporting and fishing with these (i.e. avoid pulling up the rod at more than 45 degree angle, and protect/take care of the tips during transport). Graphite rods are a lot more fragile than fibreglass or composite rods, but they are lighter and give you a lot more sensitivity when feeling bites.

      • Thanks Crys, I live near the Murray River, so it's cod and carp for me.

  • how does this fit on the bike?
