Hutch - Indoor (Suitable for 1-2 guinea pigs)

Hi
Can someone point us please in the direction of a good purchase?. We are in need of a good quality indoor hutch for a very old guinea pig. We have moved him indoors for the cooler months and need a bigger hutch; in the moving crate only at the moment which won't do. He hasn't been well, depressed and not eating well as recently bereaved (lifelong pal) so we may be getting him a rescue pal for company. The hutch has to be large enough for two piggies. Would like to collect on our own (car), so collapsible, etc and in southern suburbs of Melbourne. Saw a used one on ebay that went for about $120! It was built on a frame with wheels. Sounds rather expensive, so wondered if anyone has seen some good quality indoor ones for a reasonable price.

Don't know what size is considered 'indoor friendly', but Deals Direct has one on sale at the moment:

  • Thank you all for your responses. Yes, I saw those ones at Deals Direct too - I feel more the "outdoorsy" timber types, we keep a large townhouse (upstairs living and downstairs grass) variety of this outside, which is far too large for inside.

Ps. We don't trust those waterproof roofs and ensure they are well insulated and covered with tarps to keep dampness out. We also use several layers of newspaper inside, underneath and up the sides somewhat to keep any drafts out, before laying ample wood shavings. We form little tunnels of hay for them to snuggle into within the sleeping quarters, to eat and play with as well. Summer months are a lot more work with ensuring ample shade, ventilation and running ice bottles. A lot of work keeping guinea pigs in a happy environment but if you keep pets you have to do things right by them.

Pps. If anyone is considering purchasing please don't buy one of those with wire at the base. These are totally unsuitable for guinea pigs and can injure their feet. I actually saw one in another pet store today and pointed this out to the salesperson.

We did purchase a hutch this afternoon for about $120 at Best Friends (pet goods store), very similar to what I saw on eBay; plastic removable tray underneath, wire top and sitting on trolley. Purchased medium; the small being far too small for one, medium about right but the large (although great) was just too big for us.

One happy piggie. See how he gets along; to decide whether to save an old rescue piggie for company … but then we may have the same problem again with another lonely old piggie.

    Thanks again.
    :o)

Hi JediJan - probably too late but I would suggest going to Daiso and get some wire mesh. It makes really good alternative to C&C cage ^_^ My boys are super happy now that they are indoor and have lots of room to roam around.

Example of the Daiso wire mesh (photo found on the internet)

      Hi

Unfortunately our last guinea pig (the one I required the indoor hutch for) passed away, about 3 months after his lifelong friend passed on. They were bought together at 6 weeks old so could have been from the same litter. I think the loneliness was too much; they were 8 years old, but still, I thought that he would rally. They both looked really healthy too. Don't know what the first one (Stevie) suddenly passed away from but the last one (Sprocket) did miss him, when he realised he was alone, and actually wasn't eating as much as he usually did, so was pampered and hand fed frequently to keep his spirits up.

Now we have a new hutch and no piggies. No plans, at the moment, to buy any more piggies as we need some time to get over losing our "pudding" boys.

Don't know how to post photos of the piggies.

Very sorry to hear the news of your pet's passing…

8 years old is quite old for piggies :) You must have looked after them really well!
