Liteon External Slim USB DVD ROM $25 (Was $44) + $5 Shipping (JB HI FI Online)

110

None of my PCs these days have an optical drive but I wanted a spare one for those emergency situations or Windows installs. Surprisingly the cheapest branded USB DVD drive was this Liteon USB DVD-ROM drive I found on the JB HIFI online store.

Officeworks have the same item for $54 but theirs is also online only so they might not be able to beat JB by 5%.

  • +1 although I'm looking for an ext. DVD writer :)

    • It looks like it's just a DVD-Rom, not DVD-Writer

You can get an ASUS external DVD writer for $29 at MSY.

      • Nice, although delivery is $10.44 if you can't get into the store :(

does it work with mac? I had retina display MP

Why do people with Macs have to ask these kinds of questions?

I have no idea about MP's (I assume a Mac Book Pro) but Google tells me that (SHOCK HORROR) a MBP has not one but TWO x USB ports.

And since this is a USB device, you have two places you can plug it in.

By the way - I just noticed that the MBP also has an SD Card slot, a headphone socket and an HDMI connection. But you don't need to buy "special" versions of either of those either.

But if it was me, I'd buy a BlueRay drive, not a DVD reader.

Useless old technology. At lease floppy drives could write data lol

I wanted a spare one for those emergency situations

What if the emergency was you had to burn something onto a DVD?

Nothing elasticbands, duct tape and a quick recalibration and refocusing of the laser with the bottom of a coke bottle could not resolve.

    • That is what flash drives are for. Infinitely more useful than burning DVDs.

Depends on the user and intended recipient.

USB sticks cost far more per gigabyte than a DVD. Yes, they are more convenient to write to and delete from. They aren't as convenient to lots of people who just want to watch a movie though, or when used as a sharing format for movies or data on-the-cheap, especially to non-computer-centric people.

The DVD (movie) format is pretty much universally playable by non-geeks (most of the market) when it comes to videos. There is a high penetration of DVD playback in homes around the world.

There is far less penetration of mama's computer with right codecs to play your video, and far more hassle with tech support (for you) should it not work. DVD is still extremely popular for pre-recorded content selling in stores. Play it without any futzing around.

Again, depends on the situation. Having both is the best, in my opinion. Each offers something the other doesn't.

        • That is a cool story bro.

        • You read it all?

  • That is what flash drives are for.

  • This factory scoop item has been the same price for months, possibly since last year. It was cheaper when JB ran a special on all factory scoops, the other month. Personally, I'd rather get a better brand external drive for around $30-35

If you're up in Brizvegas, for $29 you get a USB3 Samsung one

That's a writer too. So infinitely more useful than the useless junk that this deal is for.

    • I saw them on Umart too for $30. I don't know how they're advertised as USB3.0 though, the connection is a USB2.0 mini port, not USB3.0 ports. AFAIK you can't get USB3.0 from a 2.0 port.

    • around $13 for shipping + $1 insurance :(

The Samsung Drive is around $30 in many Computer Stores across the whole country, surely you can find a store close to work/school/home? Or a cheaper delivery option?

Flash drives can also be corrupted by a virus and can lose all the data just by inserting the flash drive into an infected computer whereas a DVD-R disc can't get corrupted since it's write once optical media.

The cheapest external DVD burner currently listed on the Umart site is the Samsung external DVD writer at $30 internet price. You're better off getting that drive as opposed to this really old tech DVD reader from JB Hi-Fi.

  • If you need to re install windows and have no disc drive its easy to make a bootable USB drive instead.

    • If you need to re install windows and have no disc drive its easy to make a bootable USB drive instead.

No, it's not… it is not easy to do that.

It takes quite a bit of fiddling about and customising.

  • All you need is an iso and windows 7 usb dvd download tool that you can get from microsoft website..how hard is that?
