We have just updated my wife's car to a new Nissan Pulsar. It’s a good car and she is happy with it. Maybe I should have done more research on the servicing schedule before buying it. Reading the service log book yesterday. I find that it should be taken to the dealer every 5000klms. The car that she had before was an Astra, and that was serviced every 15000klms. We also have a Nissan XTrail and that gets serviced every 10000klms. Is this 5000klms servicing just a way of getting more money for the dealer or is it really necessary.

Thanks for your comments. The Pulsar does have capped servicing. The main question is. Do you think that servicing the car every 5000klms is excessive?
5,000km is excessive on a non performance car
just do 10,000km minor servicing
you dont say if its under warranty or not
I'd say it's a little excessive… My car is a TRD Aurion (see also: expensive, costly supercharged version of a family car but falls into the "performance" bracket) that I bought almost two years ago… In order to maintain the warranty, I need to get it serviced every six months, or every 10,000 km's. A result of which,I probably have one of the most overserviced Aurions in history as I generally only drive it 8 days a month at the very most… I think i've done almost (almost) 10,000 km's in 2 years… As soon as my warranty is up, I will be reverting to 10,000 km servicing… 5000km's seems excessive to me…
5,000 in a turbo car or a porsche or a HSV etc. is fine
10,000 is ok for ordinary cars
15,000 with a good oil is possible
Sorry, I thought that I had made it clear. The car is brand new, I picked it up last Tuesday and it has 52klms on the clock. So it has just started its 3 year warranty. What would happen if I only had it serviced every 10000klms. I would lose my warranty, I suppose.
Thanks for the reply's so far.I'm not sure why you think it is every 5,000km.
We've just purchased a brand new Nissan Pulsar and it's servicing intervals are 6months/10,000kmSee servicing schedule below.
http://www.nissan.com.au/~/media/Files/Brochures/Owners/Capp…I'm just looking at the customer information booklet, maintenance section. It starts at 1000klms. Then 5000klms and then keeps going at 5000klm intervals. I will phone the dealer this morning and ask about this, as I hadn't seen the capped brochure. Thanks
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM, you are right CSR. I phoned the dealership this morning and was told that the 5000klm servicing, is if you are using the car in extreme conditions. My wife has told me that I should read the paper on Sunday morning, and not get involved in things that I don't understand.
Thanks again.:) Glad for both our sakes that it's 10,000 not 5,000! If the wife's giving you a free pass I'd take it.
Happy to help.
Servicing in general is a way of getting more money for the dealer. That's why I always recommend getting a car with capped price servicing, using that for however long you have it for and then doing the service yourself.
It's not terribly hard nor time consuming to self-service your car, just follow the service manual, use the internet and a bit of mechanical know-how. Alternatively, have a local mechanic to do the service for cheaper than the dealership.
I usually just do services every six months.
