Dash cam for car - Where to go, what model, specials on atm? Suggestions :)

Just started to seriously consider buying a camera for the car in case of insurance issues as well as those funny crazy driver moments :)

So if anyone has any experience on where I should be looking to buy a decent one on special at the moment then you would be a legend :)

By decent I mean a camera that can

  • Be portable and sit on the windscreen/dash
  • Clearly show plate numbers
  • Good battery life
  • ok warranty?
  • Hoping not more then $250?

I am off to read about some now and post later what I have found :D

Thankies for ur suggestions :D

  • I have been looking for dash cams too. Living in Noble Park is going to pay its price eventually on the road.

Harvey Norman has the navig8tor for $99 but not sure if it's better than the el options on eBay.

    • hmmm ill look into them :) Was watching some clip earlier and it got me thinking that it might be best to get one that has a built in speedo on it incase I ever need to combat the law for fines :D

Hey man I am in the same boat as you, looking to buy. Made a thread about it a little while back and settled on this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DR32-Car-DVR-Dash-Cam-1080P-Camer…

Haven't purchased yet but I will soon when I pick up my new car.

http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/107574 was the forum thread that Frostee's talking about. See my first comment for some beginners information about DVRs.

  • aww scrimmy u changed ur dp :X

  • Probably a stupid question, but wouldn't you want the camera to run off cigarette lighter power, instead of just batter? And if so, why is battery life important in the first place? And come to think of it, how would you nicely route the power cable, you can't really go straight down from the mirror? Needs to go up, all the way around the windscreen and down the A-pillar?

    • battery power for motion sensing for when the car is powered off :D

  • Just noticed it posted on COTD.

<$60, motion sensor recording, audio recording, etc etc.

Tempted to purchase one myself but haven't done the OzB search around.

There are so many liars out there now where it comes to driving. Just one accident that isnt forced to go 50/50 because some liar decides that he doesnt want to payfor an accident that they caused (With no witness or even a witness that magically appears on their behalf) will be well worth it. And especially with all the insurance scams going around lately with people intentionally causing accidents (Such as overtaking then immediately slamming on the brakes) rear diver would be considered at fault without any witnesses or evidence and another scumbag would get away with it..

  • Haven't tried this but it is another option

  • In my experience:
    1) routing the wire around the windscreen is not difficult

    2) the camera linked on ebay by frostee will make your front windscreen messy.
Consider a more low profile camera so that you dont have wires everywhere.

    3) consider an integrated rear camera - more wiring involved, but they are optional.
The camera works just as well without them, and you can install the back in your own time.

    4) Mine is hardwired to my car.
Battery life is fine for motion, but remember it will only film in front, so if you want to film people approaching your car you must reverse park everywhere.

    5) you get cameras with built in GPS that display your speed on the film.

    6) yes you can use it as evidence, bus so can someone else if they know about it.
Most of them have inertial sensors - they save the last x minutes if you stop suddenly.
make sure you get one that does, and always use a generous SD card, just in case it doesnt trigger and it keeps recording.

  • I am using a HP f210 and found it sufficient for day to day use, plus it is quite good at night as well. It has built in GPS. And it is manufactured under different brands as well, e.g. rollei dvr-110, mivue 388…etc.

The only comment I have with it is about conntor beteween the camera and the suction cup. It is a bit loose so when first installed, the images were a bit shaking and seems fuzzy. Once you get something in there to fill it up a little bit to make it firmer, the image is much better.

From those forums above, you would probably see similar comments. I bought it overseas for under A$150.

The GPS could be for good or bad as it cannot be disabled with the cam. If you have an accidient and want to use the video as an evident, it wil show your current speed. But on the other hand, it reminds you not to speed if you want to use the video just in case.

  • Just got this one… I'll tell you if it's any good in a couple of weeks!!! :)

    • Was it any good?

    • Was it any good?

  • It is! been using it every day, It's really good value for the 60$ I paid for it! It's also pretty decent at night.

Anyway, my advice is go on http://dashcamtalk.com which is the best website for dash cams and see which one suits you better for the amount of money you're willing to spend!!!

Forget Harvey Norman, Officeworks or Super Cheap Auto websites for cams, they're useless and way overpriced for what they sell!!

    Miguel.

    • fook that looks ok for what it is

      i like the 1,080p/30 or 720p/60 option

ideally i'd want it permanently installed so it doesnt take up a cig socket hole

      • yeah that's the one I got, the newer version with the better battery, cost a little bit more.

If you know what you're doing go ahead and do it, it's not that hard. There's heaps of howto's around the internet and youtube too!

  • Mini 0803 or A118

  • Before you spend big bucks on one, just remember that iOS and Android devices are fully capable as well. Sometimes even in better quality.

My sis has been using Dailyroad Voyagers on her Samsung GS4, and it has been flawless. Just a bit hot when used together with Navigation gps and Music.

  • MGF, how long will it run with its own battery?.

Does it have rear camera option?.
