Cheap Flights Melbourne to Hong Kong 14th-21st September

Hi all,

I just want to get some inputs from experts here to find the best and cheapest solution.

I am planning to visit HK from Melb travelling on 14th and returning on 21st September. The cheapest that I can found through Skyscanner is Vietnam Airlines for $774 (the moment I am typing this) with 2 transit and staying over at Hanoi (long layover), arriving at night and the flight to HK is on the next morning and that make the total journey time of ~29 hours. I have been trying to do mix and match, i.e. Fly to KUL using AirAsia and getting any flights to HK etc. But that all worked out similar price as I am taking Vietnam Airlines. I believe that I better go with full service airlines rather than the budget considering the same price.

I tried using Expedia.com.br, .ie, .co.jp, kayak and they all come back with around $800ish. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance

  • Try this: http://matrix.itasoftware.com/search.htm

Also try breaking your journey in Sin/Kul. Mel to sin/kul seems to be the expensive bit.

  • Seems as though Vietnam air is the best way to go in your case, both your starting and finishing location aren't on the top of the list for budget carriers it seems.

I did manage to find a route for $660, but right after Vietnam airlines dropped their price to $690. I would definitely book it for $690 if it is what you want, but keep in mind the stop over in Hanoi and the costs that may incur. it may be cheaper to jump on Singapore Air $150 more per person.

Have a safe and pleasant trip either way.

After looking around some more and messing around with the dates I have actually found a much better deal. Still flying Vietnam Airlines, but changing your departure and return dates one day later. This would mean you depart on Sunday the 15th and return on Sunday the 22nd.

Doing this gets you the price of $643 per person and a much better journey when it comes to layovers. Instead of stopping over twice, you stop just once. This will make for a far more enjoyable flight, as you will get two and a half hours off the plane on the way there and four and a half on the way back. Two and a half would easily be more than enough to get to the next gate, breathe some fresh air and stretch out your legs.

    • Thanks mate, this is much better I suppose US$643=AU$715

      • I can't check right now because I'm using my phone. But I'm sure that kayak quotes in AUD.

  • Vietnam airline always stops at hochiminh city, then Hanoi. Thats their route.

    • No, it's not always. Please see above.

      • Have u called their custome service to make sure they dont stop at hochiminh to drop some customers off first?

        • No offence, but that is like saying "have you called Qantas to make sure they don't drop people off at an airport not mentioned anywhere on the itinerary".

I find it hard to believe their own website would make the mistake.

  • You should compare the savings against a direct flight (Cathay Pacific)to make sure it is worth the hassle of the stopovers, extra flight&waiting time that cuts into your HK time, potentially crappier depart/arrival times, potential to miss connecting flights due to unforseen delays and service/food standards. Enjoy your trip, HK is a great place for holiday/fun.

    • Thanks for your reply. Yes I have actually checked with Qantas and Cathay too. The cheapest direct will be $900 (Qantas). Since there will be two of us travelling, I am still considering that saving extra few hundreds would be worth it.

Understand it is getting a bit close to Sep, but I suggest may be you can wait for the next sale from Qantas or Virgin Atlantic.. they usually have direct flight (Virgin from Syd but only a additional $30 or something for the Mel-Syd leg) to Hong Kong for about $800.
If it is a Qantas sale and you book via Expedia Brazil… could easily beat the Vietnam Airline's fare..
save the hassel of wasting 2 days to get to HK….

    • Nice info. I am planning to wait a little bit too as I don't think the Vietnam Airline's fare is going to change much.

  • If you happy to go to Singapore as well, SIA usually have specials that will allow you go to HK via Sinapgore cheaper than Qantas/Cathay. I paid $3,650 for a family of 5 (1 infant) to HK/Sing last week Oct/1st week Nov. It wasn't as cheap as Brunei Air but you get fantastic attentive service, great food, modern planes (A380 on the Sing-HK leg), Kris flyer points and great looking girls expected of the best airline in the world. We also did this same trip in Mar 2012 also with SIA as it was again cheaper than Qantas and other full service airlines. We didn't mind the transit via Singapore as it allow us to catch up with family before going to HK plus Singapore is a great place for a holiday anyway (shopping, Univeral Studios, Sentosa island, good food, etc).

Qantas just have a sale and the day you specific (14 Sep to 21 Sep) is include in the sale period.

    All up $788 (include tax)

For an extra of $14 I will choose to flight direct.

  • Dear all,

I haven't managed to buy the tickets since I was waiting for the HK tour operators to confirm the date of our China tours from there. Now it seems like the price has gone up. Doh!

Now that I already have the exact itinerary which is: I need to arrive before 15th, as the tour starts in the 15th morning and I am planning to fly back to Melbourne on the 22nd September.

Now the date is getting closer. Should I book my tix now? or should I just wait if there's any more special (if any)? I'm confused.

    Thanks
