If you do a search for kitchen scales on eBay, you will find any number of 5kg, 1g resolution electronic scales (and even the odd mechanical one) starting at $13.

Yeah I think you can find them in kitchen supply stores and department stores and I think even Aldi has sold one in the past. I bought mine several years ago at BigW I think for around $30. Must have come down due to cheap electronics.
bought mine from kmart for $12 couple weeks back which looks exactly like this one. no complaints so far.

Just found my own bargain, friends. :) Big dub Salters electonic $25 on sale. Nice and flat, easy to keep clean.
