909 Petrol Mower $134.10 - Masters (Dandenong)

70

The '909 Petrol Mower 40cm' $178 ( http://www.masters.com.au/product/900033472/909-petrol-mower… ) was about the cheapest petrol mower I could find and since it's from Masters, if you got one of the EOFY $25 vouchers that would make it $153.20

So I went into the Dandenong Masters shop and next to the $178 mowers they had even cheaper one on clearance special:
'909 98CC 16" Petrol Mower' $134.10

They appeared to have a few in stock, and it's very cheap for a petrol lawnmower … but ….

It's not listed on the website so I presume you can't use the $25 off voucher
Even though "909" is Masters 'home brand' they DO NOT stock parts, blades or accessories for ANY of the '909' brand mowers. According to the shop guy I should buy one of the Troy Bilt or McCulloch mowers (all $400+) mowers because they are the only ones they stock parts for and you get what you pay for and the lack of parts/service is why the '909' mowers are so cheap.
The $134 mower has a single bar-type blade, which (according to the shop guy) is good because it can be resharpened, but bad because it's more expensive.
When I asked about buying new blades/parts he gave me some vague details about a shop that would sell them, but after consulting Google and then telephoning them, they don't stock 909 stuff.
However, as I was filling in the 'complaint form' (I thought it was stupid they don't stock parts for their own 'home brand' mowers) the lady at the front counter made a few calls and found the number for the '909' company (which is in Frankston) and when I telephoned them they said new blades would cost about $40 but are not in stock and have to be ordered, or bring the mower in to see if they can find different brand blade to fit.

  • I've seen a couple bargains, not listed online. Really wanna use my voucher! There was a pallet of microwaves at Carrum downs, not online…

Actually, I like the detailed account you have given. helps us if we were to decide to buy this mower.

    • If I were anyone looking at buying one of these, I'd avoid it. The OP basically listed a good bargain, and then every reason why not to buy one! Stick to any other well known brand - Masport / Honda / Kawasaki / Etc.

      • Kawasaki is a good brand in lawn mowers? Are you sure?

I like the detailed description in you post, gives the OZBer as much info as possible without having to go and hunt for it, a thumbs up from me OP !

Bar blades are hopeless, they go blunt after 3 or 4 mows and then they just butcher the grass. They have less reciprocating mass so you stall them out lot more often. The mower masters had for $120 at Christmas time looked better than this, it was a plate mower but only had 2 of the 4 blades fitted. My father in law bought one and it cuts good, and he has the option of fitting two extra blades to kick it up a notch…. Bam!

98cc is pretty B grade too, these Chonda copycat mowers are more powerful per cc than briggs but 98cc is piss poor. A Briggs bottom basement 375 is like about 137cc I think.

Combine that with bar blade and its stallsville, population you!

  • Also the troy bilt and mccollough is rubbish, real dodgy stuff. You see masters seem to think people are idiots, and are trying to sell old yankee brands that no-one knows about but have heard of them before and pass them off as professional equipment.

Hell if McCullogh is a good brand, than McDonalds is fine scottish dining at it best.

Its either a cheapy 4 blader or if you have real money to spend get a Briggs & stratton Rover or victa 4 blade, or step it up to a honda. Oh and be sure not to buy one of those wierd a$$ ones where you have to hold a safety bar in on the handle for the motor to run (oooh safety).. what a joke.

I have two mowers at the moment one bottom wrung rover briggs 375 that was originally a bar blade, but then I swapped the boss over to 4 blade. Since the mod it cuts though grass and weed like butter.

Just after i did this I was at a bunnings carpark sale and they had some stock of some makita briggs and stratton 450 bar balde mulchers mowers for $80. I grabbed one even though i didnt need it (huh ozbargainer,) but with the bar blade this thing is a complete dog. Hopefully I can swap it to 4 blade boss and not lose the mulching function.

  • Looks like cheap and poorly made junk from a chinese factory.
