my new Toshiba U840w only has a hdmi input option and I need it to connect to projectors for presentations however these projectors only use vga. there is an option at umart for such a converter at $50 but that's quite dear…

YES！ You are right.
You'll need a converter rather than just a cable. The HDMI to VGA cables are just for a small number of computers or media players.
The HDMI comes with digital and VGA is all about analogue signal. You'll know the difference.
However, a converter would not be cheap enough and most converters require power adapter.
