What's the best deal for around $500? I don't need any real bells and whistles just decent sound with composite in and out for some of my old gear, as well as HDMI of course. Preferably a unit with AirTunes built in as well.

Have a look on eBay for BEHRINGER, German quality.
I have a 2000 watt amp and speakers for the past year and a bit, without fault.
I use my phone to play mp3 through a mixer straight into amp. Very cheap at around $350 for amp, $45 for mixer, $600 for speakers.
I recently bought this which IMHO is a good bargain at $546. The receiver by itself costs $700 o_o,Has all the bells and whistles.

The sales rep at HN said it easily outperformed Yamaha and lower priced receivers in terms of power output and quality. Of course Denon or Marantz is going to be slightly better but you are paying top dollar for similar specs.
