Nothing flash in that setup, can't game with that CPU, no discrete GPU, PSU sucks, limited storage

Waste of money if you ask me as there is little in upgradability, you can get one of those Android boxes or one of those DSE $299 laptops to do the same jobs as this

Based on PCPartPicker (http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/19ZpS) total cost would be about $378 to build. So assuming this was the computer you wanted this is a pretty good deal.

That said, the comment above points out the problems, not a fantastic computer in terms of upgradability. Still, it might make for a decent HTPC?

PC PartPicker will tend to overprice any given build because it doesn't include shops like MSY - only the likes of MWAVE and PC Case Gear which tend to charge a significant premium to MSY prices…

See the note below with MSY/StaticIce prices it is $261 + cost of the case. The case is a cheapie, so that is a whopping $80+ differential between PC Part Picker and MSY style prices…

PC Part Picker needs to expand the number of stores it covers, otherwise it is a complete waste of time…

      • Fair call. To be honest, I usually use PCPP since I find it faster than looking up individual items on MSY and adding them together.

Forget the PC Part Picker, just use this
        http://www.logicalincrements.com/

Most of it's prices come from MSY. For parts that do not exist in MSY's inventory, it looks for PCCG and IJK as alternatives.

I still however prefer to use the old fashioned PARTS.PDF — it's always up to date and it's easy to read too. For Whirlpool users it is perhaps considered as the holy grail of computer part prices :)

        • i still prefer SI, take the G/B GTX 660 2GB OC, $219 on logicalincrements.com, but $207 @ PCDIY, as usual the advice is shop around as IT parts prices can change more frequently than even say fuel prices!

Good price for a simple unit, for the office, or web browsing and emailing duties.

      $44 Processor: Intel Dual Core G1610 @ 2.60GHz
      $45 RAM: 4GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM
      $56 Hard Drive: 500GB 7200RPM SATA3 HD (Seagate)
$65 Motherboard: Gigabyte B75M-D3H Motherboard with USB3.0 Ports
      $19 Optical Drive: 22x DVD-RW Burner (Samsung)
*— Case: Black/Silver Ultra-Slim Case with Mobile Base (Honli)
$30 Powersupply: 620W Heavy Duty PSU (Honli)
$2 Fan: 80mm Case Fan -> Probably a cheap and nasty fan that comes preinstalled with the case anyway so ehh…

Total: $261 + CASE + OPERATING SYSTEM + Assembly + shipping. Couldn't find the price of the case.

As jackwoz said, this will suffice for basic usage. Think pensioners or "I want to buy a computer for the office that staff can't waste their time playing games on" ;).

One big question I have though is what does the "Return to base" warranty cover? Will it cover shipping both ways, or is it up to the customer to pay for shipping if they need to make a warranty claim?

**Keep in mind you'll need to source your own operating system.

I was going to say its a decent deal for a computer aimed at non-techy people that simply wanted a computer to use for browsing the internet etc. And it still is, kinda.

My gripe with it is that it doesn't include windows for some reason - which is a problem when aimed at a non-techy audience who simply want a computer which is already preassembled and good to go for their internet browsing needs. Surely this can't be aimed at technically minded individuals who know full well they could buy these parts cheaper individually and have a bit of fun assembling it themselves.

I'm a bit confused as to what audience this package is aimed at, and that's my gripe. Include a windows installation and you suddenly make sense. I can't imagine any nerd checking out this deal and wanting to buy it.

Edit: I should also mention that consumers can go to the deal and "upgrade" to a preinstalled operating system, but thats at an additional price. Hence steering away even further from a cheaper deal. I should also apologise if i sound like a bit of a d**k, just a little bit annoyed at the bundle as per my above explanation.

In my experience pensioners, people with almost no IT experience, or offices call a relative, friend or consultant to set up their PC anyway. My grandmother wouldn't even be able to plug one of these in, let alone set it up to her WiFi router or install antivirus. She's not stupid, she just can't lift/bend down/see properly so even plugging in the cables would be an issue.

The added bonus of no operating system means NO CRAPWARE!! When setting up a new PC purchased from a retail outlet I often waste half an hour uninstalling garbage demos, the pre-installed 1 or 3 month 'trial' antivirus which then interferes with their real antivirus if they did try to install it, Office Trial (which sometimes insists on opening files in read-only mode despite people having a free alternative installed) and trying to remove the custom 'dial-home' 'Register Now or remind me again in 7 days' software included with Sony, HP, etc.

I don't do it myself but a few IT consultant friends have set up their elderly relatives with Linux, and they have far less issues than Windows. So it's a perfect system for them. IT guy relative doesn't have to spend hours assembling something, but can just plug it in and install Linux from a USB stick or DVD.

that's exactly why I'm looking at this for my mum, who just recently asked about getting a new computer. I couldn't be assed sourcing and assembling the parts myself. Plus no chance I can be blamed for any DOA parts as I wouldn't have been installing any.

Anyone got any better pics of the case? (or know what model it is?)

    • the tablet will be more appealing to non techy casual users since it always comes with an operating system and going into email is a touch away

the desktop system for the casual user is a dying breed, at the bare minimum i'd place a g2020 with radeon 7770, that will give so much more headroom to budget gamers playing some AAA titles

for office use, this would be sufficient, though inclusive of windows and swapping out the hdd for ssd would be much more appealing

that psu is obscenely rated for what the pc parts would be using

      • This deal is for a computer, not a tablet. Some people with poor eyesight/arthritis/low mobility CANNOT use tablets. People who want a cheap office computer to print hundreds of documents, run MYOB, desktop publish small advertising flyers etc just won't be able to use a tablet to do their job. Same as a person who wants to buy a four door sedan with a big boot COULD save money by buying a 3 door coupe, but everybody who wants to sit in the back seat will be squashed up and they won't have room in the back for groceries.

Uggghhh… Tablets.. horrible things. Can't type easily. Need to prop them up on something, otherwise you can't type two-handed. Can't print easily. Can't share files on a USB stick easily. Can't watch a DVD unless you first copy it onto the tablet using another computer. THAT WAS NOT MEANT AS FLAME BAIT - they are just the facts from my perspective.

Tablets have their place. But I hate them personally, and none of my family can stand using them. My brother was given a FREE iPad retina display by his friends for his birthday, but he uses his laptop for nearly everything.
