New Washing machine, Beds and Couch's

So following on from the previous post, as you have probably gathered I am buying a shitload of new stuff, essentially going very broke.

So in my quest to spend as little money as possible and get really good items, I call on the support of the OZB community once again.

I am looking to dump all my old appliances that I've had for over 8 years and get some new ones.

I have always had a front load washing machine, as I thought that it would be cheaper and give a better clean, keeping in mind the washing machine is used probably 3-4 times a week. Recently I've had a few debates about which is better so I'm open to suggestions.

I need to get new beds, and stop using the shitty metal frame, foam mattress beds. Its killing our backs. Now I have never been into a proper bed store and wouldn't know the first thing about buying them or what the expected price is.

I was also looking to buy some inexpensive couches, either made out of good fabric or that fake leather stuff that's around. I think a proper leather couch will be way to expensive. So I'm not even going to look at them.

Thanks again fellas :)

  • I did all this at the start of the year.

Bed: pocket springs are reasonable and very comfortable. ~$1000 for my mattress. Don't skimp on the mattress, you spend at least 1/3 of your life there.

Couch: got a couch + chaise from ozdesign for around $1000. The chaise is reversible which is handy. It's ok, but the fabric irritates our skin a bit so we've put a throw over it. Not the best quality but the cheapest that was reasonable.

Washing Machine: personally i don't like front loaders, my friend had one and it takes forever (like 2.5 hours vs 30 minutes) so if you need to do a load you need to plan it. It also made the clothes smell different (not bad), but that could have been the powder. I think they use less water though (but probably more power given the time?). They are also gentler on clothes but may not get heavy duty stains out.

  • thanks one man clan, I was under the impression that the spring beds didn't last long as the springs started to wear out. Has that been your experience?

ill have a look at what odesign has to offer, i previously purchased from a place called damro (i think) in dandenong. they were quite good.

that's what i've been debating with a few people. the thing is that there's a setting on my front loader called quick 30 which takes 30 mins to do the wash, now I don't know how that compares to the top load cycle you are talking about.

    • These days they are pretty reliable. No matter what you get you should replace it eventually anyway - like 10 years maybe max? Pocket springs are old tech and they basically haven't improved it since. Tempur is new tech and amazing, but like 3-4k. They are pretty protected from moisture, and get a mattress topper to further improve that.

Top loaders clean much better by nature, but can cause more wear.

  • I cant comment on furniture, I moved into a place nearly a year ago and still have the bare minimum furniture wise as I find most stuff ridiculously priced. Looking at good quality second hand might save you a fortune, also look at Costco they have usually 1 or 2 couches for sale but the quality is good and the price is reasonable in addition they have a really good return policy if it breaks or something happens.

I also bought my queen mattress from Costco, it was just under $500 but that was for the spare room, I bought mine from a local guy in Melbourne it was a really nice mattress that cost my around 1250 made from organic latex, no springs so really good and comfortable.

I hate front loaders, they take forever, you cant open the door, they dont take as much clothes. I always had a top loader and will continue to use them.

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks lance, I will have a look at what costco has to offer, I guess I am leaning more towards a top loader, seing as I have already had a front loader for the last 8 years or so. Perhaps the top loader will take a bigger load and mean that I dont have to run it as often, i'll compare what's out there.

I might go out there and sleep on a few mattresses. I am not aware of lots of different things, especially after reading the other mattress post. Think I need to try out the different kinds for myself.
