Thoughts on car share? (e.g. Flexicar, Goget)

Thinking to sell my car as I drive infrequently.
But I know I would still want to have access to a car on some occasions.
So I came across these car share services, which seem to be gaining popularity.
Has anyone tried it?
do you think it is more cost effective than owning a car?

You'd have to work it out based on your usage I guess.

and your proximity to a parking space for one of those services…
If you live in the CBD, then definitely an idea to investigate further. If you're in the suburbs, then good luck having one remotely near by!

Depends how many kilometers you do.

Should also compare it to a taxi

Yeah Davo1111 and the cost of car rental and/or taxi per year based upon your usage too.

When my car died a few years ago I decided to try going without, which has turned out well. When I occasionally need one I Rent-a-Bomb for $32 a day or take a taxi - still works out heaps cheaper than owning a car

Depends what you use it for aswell. If its for lugging gear vs just transport. The bus could be cheaper for most of your trips.

With Rego/greenslip alone its about $20 week
Add cost of car, service repairs, insurance etc.

The other cost is historical cost (I.e not $) for time or comfort or convenience. Its hard to find a car you can transport your dog in.

Plus your local car may not be available at the time you want it. I waited 3 hours for a taxi once so now I know they are unreliable. I tried going without my car, gave up and registered it again.

Just catch a taxi to the shopping centre, grab your groceries, then pee on a paddy wagon. Coppers give you a free ride home and you save the return cab fare.
