Where to buy a wireless Xbox PC controller?

Hi guys, getting into Steam and I need a wireless controller and I have noticed a lot of support for the 360 controller so I'm after one. Where can I get one on the cheap with the dongle? (must be wireless)

Also on a side-note, is the PS3 controller any good with the PC? I've seen offline mods to that Chinese freejoy (or w/e it's called) driver program, does this work well?

  • If you can't locate the Xbox 360 + Dongle pack, you can buy those items seperately.

On ebay there should be some generic adapters

These work perfectly fine with the ordinary console controller.

    • Thanks mate, I was wondering if they were OK.

    • Really I can use an ordinary xbox 360 controller from the console with the dongle and have it work. Never tried it but sounds absolutely right and possible.

I bought a wireless controller with dongle from mightyape, worked great then the controler left analog stick stopped responding after two weeks. Didn't bother RMAing it, thought will test out another controller with the dongle and see what happens (I'm surprised I didn't consider trying another controller from my friend). Just have to see now if the problem is from the dongle or controller.

      Thank you

  • was looking at that as well though wired doesn't really matter, length shouldn't be too much of an issue
any good cheap places to get a legit first party microsoft controller?

  • That banned site starting with a D and ending with a X has them. Lots of good reviews but a few saying they're fake, so who knows.

    • ROFL.

guess who's webvert was on my screen when i read this thread

Picked mine up from Ozgameshop less than a month ago when they had 10% off for it. Works exceptionally well.

I used to use my PS3 controller and motioninjoy and it worked beautifully —— but I have to admit it was fussy. Finally, the irritation of having to basically cross my fingers every time I would start it up got to me, and I broke down and finally bought a legit Xbox 360 controller. (Mind you, it wasn't actually THAT hard… if it didn't sync up properly you just had to go through the motions of turning on the PS3 controller again- and again- and again… but for me, that got old, fast)

I have to admit though, I still like the ergonomics of the PS3 controller better.

As an aside, maybe you could still grab one of those cheap sub $80 Xbox 360 consoles!!! That way you not only get a controller, you get the whole freaking Xbox and get the exclusives on it that aren't dirt cheap on the PC. LOL.

    • I've had a lot of 360's and always sell them on lol. Sold last one a few months ago so I can't go buying another as the wife will kill me.

    • Firstly, uninstall MotionInJoy. That "driver" is nothing but trouble.

There's a much better PS3 driver available here:

Look for the filter driver that installs as a service. You'll also need to install the actual Microsoft XBOX360 controller drivers too.

I don't personally have one but Logitech controllers should work just as well.

The main problem I have with PS3 controllers is you typically run them in XBox emultion to work with games. This is fine until the game says 'quick! Press the green trapesoidal Z' button!', and I have no idea what that means on a PS3 controller.

    • Is there a custom driver that you have to install to get games working correctly with the PS3 controller? A lot of games require you to manually bind keys when you use a controller other than a xbox one, which is the main reason I bought the xbox gamepad.

Now I regret it though because the DPAD is atrocious for classic sidescroller games like Street fighter.

      • You have to install custom software which is ad supported and a bit hacky. Works OK once set up, all the functions work but for someone who doesn't really know what the buttons are on an XBox controller you may be confused by what you are being asked to do.

The advantage of the logitech controllers are they match the XBox control notation.

Just bought a Xbox W/less Controller. Your post just reminded me that I do hate that damn D-Pad. Now do I open this or not? hmmmmm

        • d pad is not really used these days.. i have wireless black and i dont use dpad at all.. how much did you buy?

        • $48 for a camo one price matched BigW at EB Games.

        • that's not too bad.. i bought mine about $60 with dongle..

        • dongle is costing me $7.35 delivered

Just an FYI, in case the dongle doesn't work.
For windows, go to device manager and find the unsupported usb device and install drivers and select pick from on computer and select microsoft xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver and it should work afterwards.

    • Thanks for the info, will be at least a week to wait on this though, HK delivery…

  • Get a wired controller if you can.

So much less of a headache to setup than the wireless controller. I am a system admin and I couldn't be bothered with it half the time.

    • Wired is not worth the hassle for me. I am trying to make the adaption from consoles to Steam as easy as possible. There's no way I'm trailing a long lead from my PC to my plasma and as far as I know this should be a case of installing drivers and then leaving the dongle plugged into my PC. I'm not a system admin but I know my way around a PC very well and can't see this being a hassle.

    • There's nothing to it. You plug it in, it installs drivers and as long as the dongle is plugged in, it will detect when the controller powers on. Steam will also detect an Xbox controller and will remap keys when you switch input from keyboard/mouse to gamepad. There's no headache, it's idiot-proof.

To OP, I got mine from Ozgameshop when they had them on sale for $40 and used a $5 voucher, bringing it down to $35. Good deal, and with Big Picture mode, I've basically been playing very pretty Xbox games for a fraction of the price.
