    No idea how is it?

So why is this a bargain? How much do they normally sell this for? it looks expensive.

It's cheap for what it is, and probably reasonable quality too - so its probably a good buy, but its not easy to tell if its a bargain or not, we'd need a sound/audio buff.

      • thats exactly why i posted tbh. will be great to get a qualified opinion before i think about getting the speakers. As a graduate this seems pretty great for how much i intended to spend.

what did you post? this is your first comment ever. who are you?

      $299 RRP

      195W RMS (Front 2x 50W, Rear Left/ Rear Right/ Centre 3x 15W, Subwoofer 1x 50W)

FWIW - of the surround sound movies I watch, 80% of all sound comes from the centre channel.
      So… 15W.

      • My center speaker is 100W RMS so that's pretty lousy.

      • Yeah in every 5.1 speaker setup that I have used it always seems like the centre speaker volume is too low, and thats when the centre speaker is usually the same as the front speakers.

It sounds like a terrible idea to have the centre speaker so much lower than the front left and right speaker.

        • I can set the centre speaker db higher with my Pioneer.

        • This unit allow independent volumes for the sub, centre, left surround and right surround - relative to the front speakers.
With a little tweaking I am now happy with the balance of all the sound

The theory is, it's from Aldi therefore its automatically a bargain.

      • $299 with floor standing 5.1, receiver with karaoke and 60 days to try.

  • HDMI is all you get video-wise, not as big an issue as it may have been a few years ago but you might want to hook something up via component, too bad, there isn't even a composite input. Also using PMPO, really……

On the plus side it doesn't look too bad looks-wise and there is the 60 day money back guarantee..

What audio formats does this receiver support? i.e. DTS HD master, Dolby true HD etc. The specifications are lacking in this department.

    • I highly doubt the avr will do DTS-MA formats at that price

  • It doesn't say what formats it supports :(

  • This actually doesn't look that bad, mate of mine just paid $650 for a samsung combo bluray and HT and really I'd probably rather have this. I think it will be a better deal once its been sitting around the store for a while and the manager drops them to $249. The back of the amp looked okay but the front finish looked pretty dodgy. All depends on formats and speaker quality. Might be worth checking out instore to see what the speakers look like etc. I think the speakers look okay from the photos though be equivelent to some of the old DSE ones, which go pretty good in my system.

Also i guess if its crap you can return it.

not sure if it has rca inputs though seems to have some jacks in the bottom right corner of the photo. Having said that I dont have anything to plug in there, reel to reel or record player…
    .

    • For $299 should be better than those 500-800 all in one home theatre system, they are so tiny.

  • I wonder whether it supports 3d . If yes then good price..

  • Looks like a good deal, will buy one for testing.

    • Is it active sub or a passive sub? From the picture of the unit back it looks that this one has a passive sub (there are 6 speaker outs on the photo = 5 +1).
It looks that this is where the cost is saved.. very cheap but there is a reason for that.

      • Even a Sherwood 5.1 ch amp cost more than $299 without the speakers. Got nothing to lose for testing, if the sounds are crap then take a back n get a refund.

  • Anyone bought it? how is it?

  • Ok. Still putting it together but I have a horrible feeling it doesn't do Dolby digital or DTS just pro logic…
    Sub is passive

  • Picked up a set earlier this morning, but need to tidy the lounge before I assemble it.
Later in the day I was at another Aldi waiting at the checkouts when 2-3 people in Aldi uniforms wheeled trolleys out of the store loaded with speakers, when I mentioned it to the guy serving me, he said that he couldn't get one himself because they were all brought by the other guys in the shop!

  • Did any music test yet?

  • Music from the radio sounds pretty good to me. I've tested some movies through it and they sound good also, though it does appear to only be decoding as pro logic - even though the display reads DTS source.
    Can anyone else confirm this?
I am currently using my existing in wall surround speakers and active sub with it.

  • I saw Hornsby still have a lot.

  • Further tests seem to show it decoding Dolby digital 5.1 and DTS tracks ok.
I don't have DTS hd or any other audio or 3D to test, but I doubt it would.
Remote is typical cheap feel, and it lacks many features/options in other units but for what I need I am very happy with it now for the price.

    • Are you still using your existing surround speaker to test?

      • I am using my existing surround speakers and active sub.

  • So I went and bought one, sounds pretty good but I'm not an expert.
In fact this is my first home theatre system.

So I don't know if I should keep it or return it, I can't find any reviews about the damned thing.

What do you guys think? I it worth it to return it and build up a good system bit by bit starting from a really good receiver?

    Thanks guys

    • I think if you are happy with it and it does what you need, keep it. If for whatever reason you you think another system would be better then take it back.
I'm keeping mine as I am perfectly happy with it (for the price). It's not perfect but I have no need for anything more at this point.

  • I purchased one the day released, but I have a question.

I am feeding the amplifier via an optical (Toslink) cable from the TV (Samsung Smart TV), but irrespective of what is being shown on the TV the Rear Surround speakers always have sound, even if the TV is showing (say) a 1940's B&W movie, that definitely was not filmed with surround sound. Is this normal?

I would have thought that the rear speakers wouldf have only worked when there was a Dolby Surround Sound program being broadcast, NOT with everything being broadcast. Is this normal for this unit as it not only sounds weird but is quite distracting and even when a Surround movie is being broadcast (eg Pirates of the Caribbean) the surround sound does not sound as effective as in the theatre when suddenly there is sound action all around you. My setup seems to have all speakers working at the same time and basically putting out what the Centre speaker is producing.

Any advice from anyone who has used the system.

Also, how do they advertise a power output of 1000watts when adding up the power (as indicated in the manual) there is only about 195watts all up?

    • See here for the kinds of power specs that may be quoted:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_handling

Conservative engineers tend to stick with RMS power, but also note that most AV systems of this ilk can easily put out more volume than you can stand/is healthy for you so even a small amount of power is enough.

      • Thank you for the information.

Now, I will have to discover how to switch off the 5.1 when not required, as I am sure that there was no mention of this in the instructions — will have a re-read tonight!!!!!

I can say for those who have asked earlier, the sound quality (apart from the annoying rear speakers always being on) is quite good, especially for the price and the Sub puts out quite a "thump". A $1K plus system could possibly be better but for the average person in the average sized room the $299 is good value.
