  • How do these guys make any money? How much does the developer get if you pay 1 cent for the game? Does the developer "give" these keys for free to Humble Bundle and let them keep all profits?

When you purchase, it will ask you to divide up your contribution between Humble, charity and devs. If you pay 1 cent, you are basically wasting everyone's time and actually hurts Humble. So don't be a dick and pay whatever you think is appropriate.

If 1c purchases were really hurting them, then they are more than capable of implementing a minimum spend. As it is, the ability for people to pay 1c has gained them huge word of mouth appeal without the need to market anything and has probably attributed a lot to their success.

As for the original question, you'll notice the average paid is usually well above 1c, and they implement higher tiers to encourage people to spend more.

As they say if you want steam keys it will be a $1 or more :)

      • I'm asking how it works with respect to the developers, not that I would pay 1c.

Obviously there's no money to be made if you can pay 1c. But what is the deal the developer has in place when this happens? Did the developer give HB full discretion on how much they are going to get paid? i.e. basically, did the developer give these games away on the understanding that it could be out of charity to the customer? Or are they expecting a fixed fee during the sale period?

        • There are sliders at the bottom that determine where the money goes, and the buyer can choose how that money is split. The understanding woulf have to be that a developer may make absolutly $0.00 on a purchase, regardless of what the total purchase price is given the user can choose to assign it all to a charity or as a 'Humble Tip'.

For 1c buys, I imagine they either split that value to a smaller decimal place or the money goes all to the party that has the highest percentage on those three sliders at the time of purchase.

I don't know what other people do, but I ually change it so that the charity gets 70% of the funds and the rest is split between the Developer and as a 'Humble Tip' (I don't touch those sliders, I let them automatically adjust).

        • So developers are willing to give the game away for free?

    • Each digital sale of a game (ie with no physical game disc) brings a huge (percentage-wise) profit margin. Game devs incur lots of fixed costs in developing the game (time + capital), in marketing and distribution channels, but the variable costs associated with selling each digital copy once the game is out there is minimal.

Therefore each sale will bring them more money.

      • If you pay a cent then the hosting, bandwidth cost, devs, etc are going to lose something somewhere along the line.

  • Can some one say how the keys are broken down? I have Rochard already and am considering getting this just for the DLC, but would pay a little more if I could gift the main game key to some one else.

You get 2 keys, one for the game and one for the DLC

      Rochard Steam Key
      Hard Times DLC Steam Key

  • I know its only a dollar to find out but, is it any good? I don't wanna clutter up my library with crap if possible.

    • a nice little fun puzzle/platformer (if a little easy), with great game mechanics. Hard times is "harder", but only in the sense of more precision and timing (= more frustrating rather than mentally challenging).

i'd say it's worth the $1. i just wish it was a bit more mentally challenging (in particular the DLC, which they specifically created as a response to criticism that the game was too easy).

Just paid $1.5 for hard times! Dammit, knew I should have waited!

      • Thanks, I grabbed it already anyway.

Here we go.. another game to add to my expanding collection of games that I keep telling myself I will play.

    Thanks OP!

I used to be a gamer, now "game collector" is probably more accurate :/
