Freelander PD80 from DX Thread

Hi guys,

I am not sure how many of you received the Freelander PD80 tablet from the last DX deal. I am one of those people. I am not sure what the exact model number is for my tablet, I got the "retina" version, I think there is one that is not "retina". I thought I would start a thread and see what others did with their tablet.

I haven't found a good case for my tablet yet, I know someone pointed out a universal one from ebay for $7. I would be interested to know if anyone bought one off ebay. For me, I didn't buy the one off ebay because it looked like the tab is too wide for the tablet, ie. the case will not hold the tablet securely. I have done a comparison with 2 other 9.7 tablets, the HP Touchpad and an iPad. The touchpad has a more rounded corner whereas the iPad is the opposite, ie less rounded compared to the PD80. The trouble with Touchpad and iPad cases is that they do not have holes in the right place.

I found some cases that should not cover the holes, but not sure if the tablet will fit an iPad case. Does anyone know whether it will fit an iPad case?

The other issue I have found is the tablet quite regularly comes up with Application not responding dialog boxes. Does anyone has this issue? I am still on the stock rom. I flashed it to CM10, but found that it drains the battery too fast, so I went back to the stock rom.

Any other gems of information outside of my 2 questions would be appreciated too.

  • Wow.. no comments. Anyway, just an update to anyone else with the PD80-HD tablet. I was getting ready to chuck my tablet out of the window and wait to get the next Nexus 7, due to constantly getting Application not responding errors. Anyway, I found a forum that someone had updated their PD80-HD to a newer rom running Android 4.2.2 ported from other A31 CPU tablet rom running SDK 3.2.

Anyway, I flashed my tablet with the rom and now it is running like a dream. Glad I didn't waste the $116 that I paid for my tablet.

  • if possible …link to forum…??

  • +1

    This forum.. about page 20 onwards… http://www.pandawillforum.com/showthread.php?17416-Latest-RO…

I think it is called plug force ROM or something. Flash with phoenix suite. You have root it separately though.

  • hey geek001,

Thanks for that update !! I'm ready to chuck the tablet out too but your replies have given me hope ! I'll try the 4.2.2 update but my main issue has been battery life, it just drains it so much. I've been doing the wi-fi OFF when not in use, lowest brightness, killing apps etc but the battery just isn't there ! I'll have to try the 4.2.2 and see how it goes.

    • Are you on the cyanogen mod rom? I have heard that the battery drain was due to location services being on all the time which is useless for this tablet since it doesnt have gps. Try turning it off and see if the battery life is better. But still the best thing is to try the new 4.2.2 rom. The battery life isnt great though but I used it intermittently throughout today and it has still got about 30% battery left… also dont judge how fast the battery drain is when the battery is full. I noticed that the percentage ticks down really quickly when the battery is full but seems to tick slower at lower percentages. When the battery is full I am down to 97% within a few minutes but it seems to stay at 14% for a few minutes. I estimate my battery should last about 4 hours of constant use with wifi turned on.

      • Yes, I am on the CM10 ROM. Sweet, I'll switch off location services (side note - google maps shows a moving blue dot for me though). I have been getting 3-4 hours, maybe I'm expecting it to last too long. Have to keep in mind it is a retina display. Interesting about the battery draining slower, will keep an eye out for that. A few questions regarding 4.2.2,

        1) So this isn't AOKP or CM 10.1 or any such ROM ? Is this like android 4.2.2 stock firmware ? I'm new to android systems so just trying to get an idea :)

        2) Does the youtube app play videos natively ? On CM10 I had to download some older version of it to make sure it worked.

        3) Are the steps straight forward like the ones mentioned here —> http://grab.by/p30Q

If it's via phoenix suite, I need a windows comp again. Sigh

        4) Have you tried the latest comment by celoiser on the thread for reducing screen resolution to save battery ?

Thanks a lot for your help !

        • I am guessing the ROM is actually ported from the stock ROM for other A31 tablets like Ainol and Onda… so it is flashed using Phoenix suite instead of twrp. I am not too sure myself.

Yes. I downloaded the YouTube app from play store and it plays videos just fine. Previously I had to download an older apk and turn off automatic updates for the YouTube app.

I used the instructions from here. http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/82866-android-422-on-freelan…

Except I didn't use the ainol ROM. I used the Next way plug force ROM instead.

I haven't tried reducing the screen resolution cos I figured the main reason I got this tablet was because of the great screen resolution. Why would I want to cripple it? :)

I am really loving this tablet at the moment. Now I just need to find a nice case for it. Haven't found a good one yet though that can allow me to fold the cover like an iPad.

        • Thanks for that link !

I wonder if I can just do this

          1) root with file 'root.core4 ZIP' use app update of ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...3&d=1366673427) —> I might try using TWRP for this.
          2) download android terminal emulator from playstore
          3) download the bootloader (http://d-h.st/S0D) and unzip to sdcard
          4) on the command line terminal type:
          "su"
          "cat /sdcard/bootloader.img > /dev/block/nanda ; sync"

        • Root.core4 zip file is for rooting the ROM though. The actual ROM is here: http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/83929-rom22-july-2013-nextwa…

Step 3 and 4 in your comment is just to stop too much battery drain.

That is from what I have read though…

          Basically I did:
          1. Flash plus force ROM using phoenix suite.
          2. Root using the link from my last comment.
          3. Ran bootloader.bat from the file in step 3 of your comment.

        • Thanks for all your help geek001, I think the main issue is battery life for me. I'd like something that lasts the whole day (and longer if on standby). I should have probably gone for a 'name' brand but the hardware of this device was outstanding for the price !

I'm sure you'll keep enjoying the tablet :)
