  • Maybe try ANZ travel card.

Or maybe just hold on to the physical cash.

  • +2

Japan is more of a cash country. :)

    • Oh oops. Misread your post. Everyone I know carries cash to Japan though. The exchange rates on a money card don't seem that cool. Well, for CBA at least the last time I checked.

  • You might want to check if the card you propose to use is accepted in Japanese ATMs. IIRC only the 7-11 ATMs and one or two other brands accept foreign cards. Despite the others sporting Visa and MC logos, they only accept Japanese cards.

If you want to lock in the rate, why not buy a wad of yen now?

    • As of April this year the ATMs in 7-11 didn't accept foreign mastercards so the 28 degrees didn't work. Only Japan Post ATMs worked.

      • Ooh, you're right. That's sad. Such a byzantine country when it comes to money.

      • The 7-11 and a few other random ATMs I tried in Feb-Mar accepted my Citibank Visa Debit (same rates more or less as 28 degrees but debit).

        • Citibank atms are also quite reliable. I was in Japan in April though and found a lot of the major banks now work for my debit mastercard. Try selecting the credit card cash advance option even if withdrawing from a debit card.

        • Yeah, there were heaps of citibank branches I seemed to stumble across in most of the major cities.

  • Sorry didn't see the post above

    • infinity89-thanks for the info. that sucks now. the exchange rate isn't that great now as the Aud keep falling. I'm hoping and praying that it will rise again in the next few months and I'll lock in the rate with a travel card. I guess it's better tobuy notes from money changer who always take 0.4 points off the official exchange rate.
